Hart44 that fabric is gorgeous, love the bag!

Thanks for the wadding info, I have a DM nearby so will buy from there.
  • I'm going to be doing quite a bit of Christmas sewing now on my machine. Does anyone have any recommendations for good quality thread that doesn't break in the machine for sewing up mainly cotton fabrics?

    Thanks in advance

I always try to use Guttermanns threads. They are expensive though.

yeh, I have actually managed to sew for about 40 minutes today. I made a wallet for my friend Molly to match the rest of her handbag set, and started on a winnie the pooh bag. Not much but its better then nothing at all.
I need to start making the costumes for the schools christmas songs/play stuff so the school gave me a black sack of sheets/waffle fabric to start with. I shall have to see about getting more White stuff as I go along. I have asked the school on thier facebook to keep mens shirts for me, especially the white, that will make Angels/snowflakes costumes, but also joseph etc etc. So we will have to see, and I will have to get sewing! I do not want an epic session on the overlocker like I did for the carnival!.

dont know how i didnt see this before but would love to join. i was bought a singer sewing machine 26 years ago after i had just spent a fortune on teeny weeny dresses for dd1 when she was just starting to toddle and convinced myself i could do better for cheaper. unfortunately that was as far as i went and the machine remained in its box in the bottom of wardrobe. i never used it but 10 years later a neighbour borrowed it and back it went in wardrobe. christmas i then decided i was going to hunt it out and with the help of a friend was going to mend a duvet cover only to find half the things were missing so back in box. i was then bought one from the kids and yes it sat in box again until i saw a notice a few months ago in a local community centre for lessons once a week. i joined and i am loving it. as soon as i could do straight lines i dived straight into a prima halter neck dress that became too fiddley and the weather turned and so i used another pattern for a long pencil skirt in corduroy. just finished it last monday and am pleased as punch its a little too small for me which i knew it would be as pattern only went up to a 20 and am only judt getting into biggish size 20s but am pleased as punch to find you and am about to read all the threads and know i will pick up some invaluable advice. i cant wait!!

You may remember this piece of felt that I posted earlier
    th_SAM_2868.jpg

I have covered it in free hand embroidery. It is to thick to make anything with (like covering a notebook) so it's now a mat on the windowsill, with a vase of flowers on it.

I think that it should have been rolled longer and harder to make it thinner....but, if there is a next time I'll know that a bit more elbow grease would be needed:o

Poppy - I use Guttermanns as well. I did buy some high cotton content thread but it kept breaking so I've gone back to the standard thread. I have also used the packs of cotton from Ikea and for seewing bags they are fine. They are about £2.50 - £3 for a pack of four, they come in black and white pack or mixed - blue, red, yellow & green.

Mooloo - glad to hear you've managed to get some sewing done. Things are looking up.

Of course you can join! The more the merrier. We are on Facebook too. Although I am not there often. Still not good at it.!
There is also a No Chat Sewing Thread with loads of links to fab stuff. I could spend hours looking at Tutorials, others pdf's etc etc. Which has been keeping me going while I couldnt sew.
Fingers crossed that I will be back at the machine soon.

If you need to make things a little bigger, then it is quiete easy to size things up one size. If you are usuing a multi pattern, you can see the difference in the size lines, and can trace the size out, adding the same amount again to the seams, and moving the darts etc in line with the others. It will work fine for things that are simple. But is a bit more difficult if your pattern is made up of lots and lots of pieces.! But you may find that you could make something to fit you, even if the actual pattern is a bit small for you.
If you understand what I am on about.
I have thought of teaching sewing lessons, and nearly did when I lived in the village last year, but of course I moved to the town, so Havent had the opportunity to find somewhere that would be suitable. Maybe next year.
If my health ever lets me get back to sewing on a regular basis.
Today I am going to ignore the housework, and will sew when DGD is at Nursery for at least 30 minutes.! Hopefully my arm will behave for that long.!
    :D

Good luck with the sewing Mooloo xx

Pennib, what a good idea for your lovely piece of felt xx

I had another order last night, this time for a table runner so I will be busy over the next few days.
  • I recently found this great website for soft toy patterns. I plan on making the reindeer/polar bear/snowman for my son and nephew this christmas. Well, if I can decide which one I like best I will. I also love the monkey, lion...

Anyway, if you sign up to their mailing list they send you a free pattern for a cute bear.

    http://www.funkyfriendsfactory.com/

They send you the patterns via email - same with the ones you buy then you can print out and make a start immediately. I dont think they need resizing either. You can order printed copies for some, if not all of them too. HTH someone!
