I have used linseeds to fill pin cushions as I read somewhere that they help to keep the pins sharp.
  • When I just read your comment pws52, I wondered if there were linseeds in a pincushion that I have, and then I read your name and realised that you gave me the pincushion in the fabric swap!
I haven't seen you on here for a long time, are you all right?

I've never heard of using linseeds before but that pincushion has got a really lovely feel to it and a bit of weight.
  • Rufusdog, your tops are lovely and I like how you've used another top you already have as a pattern. I don't think I could do that.

Hi I love this thread you are all so clever. I have a lot of small squares of material and I was wondering about making pin cushions for my friends for Christmas. I am a complete beginner so please bear with me. 1. What would I use for stuffing. 2. Can I put some dried lavender in them? I will have to hand sew because I dont have a machine. I keep thinking I will treat myself one day lol x Thanks for all the advice Im sure you will pass on xx

For stuffing just use normal stuffing. Polyfiber or supersoft. I wouldnt suggest putting lavender in them as Im sure that can blunt pins. I would only use lavender etc in hanging hearts, drawer stuffers etc. Welcome back to the thread. x

HMO, I think I will invest on my return from Portugal.
I want to continue making clothes as well as the bags etc.
I had some fabrics ordered from a company in Germany, but twice they sent me emails to tell me the stuff I had paid for was out of stock. Now one of the the things is sold out and not replaceable. So I have sent an email and cancel it. Hopefully they will give me a refund by the time I am back off my hols.
I wanted to make DGD's coat this winter.
I had a dress cut out for the holiday but with a dodgy arm, I havent made it to the sewing machine since last saturday.
We are off to the BF's tomorrow, so I doubt I will get to sew before then.
dotty girl, you can make lots of things handsewing, even with a few scraps. I havent the time today to give you any links, ideas etc but I am sure the people on here will.
I have spent a few days at BF's sewing by hand a few scraps and make enough to make a handbag, or cushion cover. All around 2" squares.
Pincushions are usually stuffed with polyester fibres, and or things like the filling from old cushions, duvets, and even cut up tights. All a pincushion needs to be is very well stuffed, and the main fabric firm enough to withstand lots of pins in it. So loose weave is useless you just loose the pins.

i find it alot quicker to use a quilters ruler and rotary cutter than scissore and alot more precise too.

i dont make clothes but when i made the dress and top for my DD a few months ago i still used the ruler and cutter over the pattern the only bit i needed scissors for was a curved bit.:)

A while ago on here, it was mentioned how to make your own cotton labels. Now i do have all i need, twill ribbon, transfer paper etc.Now for the life of me, i cant get my name to print properly on the ribbon. It appears back to front.I have tried reversing it on my pc but nothing works.

Can any body help me with this please.

I can't remember the designer of the fabric I used for this apron - either Joel Dewberry or Amy Butler.

I can do zips - but don't like sewing them. This is Marie Keltzer fabric.

    Lovely makes Florence xx

    I made two tops yesterday.

The fabric was £2 a metre and I bought two metres of each so £4 a top. I have sewn some beads around the front neck. There are a couple more photos on my blog.
Love the tops - so long since I made clothes for myself - you are inspiring me to start again.

Thanks Florence, making clothes isn't as hard as people think, these tops were quite easy. I wrote a bit on my blog how I did them. I made the two in an afternoon.
