I'm a bit of a lurker on here & can't sew for toffee and you helped me out once before & I'd like some more advice please.

I've got a leather jacket that is too good to throw away but the stitching of the lining has split down the back centre seam - I've sewn it up once but the original stitching had already started to fray the material. My repair was stronger than the lining and it has gone again. It looks a right mess. I haven't asked anywhere how much it might cost to re-line it (probably too much) but wonder if you have any suggestions how I could rescue it myself?

    TIA

I have had to repair similar. It was easier to buy some similar lining and add a panel about 5" wide down the length of the back. So that it took in the damaged more fragile lining. You could just sew a pannel, hand slip stitch over the current seam and that would be neater if you struggle with sewing. It would just mean turning it all in around the edges and stitching over the damage.
    Hope that this helps.
alternatively its completely re lining it, and thats quite difficult to do, as sewing to the facings etc are tough.

Skirt no. 1 finished. And so far I have learnt the following :-

1./ gabardine needs more than 0.25" seam allowance because it frays quite badly.

2./ trying to stitch a skirt to a waistband that is already elasticated is quite difficult and results in many stabbed fingers....

3./ if I'm going to work in inches I need a cutting board in inches. But I can't afford one, so am multiplying back and forward into inches/cm all the time. Bah! And I will make a mistake sooner or later...

Will have a rethink about no.2 and see what I can improve. All OH had to say was "where's the pockets?" - do girls school skirts normally have pockets? Don't remember mine having pockets... And DD is only 4 now, but I think I will need to discover how to line them as she gets bigger...

I love the pin cushions! I need one of those, with 2 littlies running around I do need to keep an eye on all my pins....

Lovely giveaway Pootle, I am already following you on both Blogger and Facebook and I have just added your botton to my blog and blogged about you lol xx

I had a week off sewing, OH was on nights, then he had some time off and we were out and about. I finally got up there yesterday and it felt great doing some more sewing again.

I finished off another cushion cover with the crazy patchwork but I need to get a pad to go inside before I put it on my shop. It will have to wait until next week as I am broke at the moment.

I made another table runner out of some of the scraps I have, it is in autumn colours and I put it on my shop last night. I quite like making them, but I need to get to Dunelm Mill one of these days to get some more co-ordinating fabric to use with the patchwork scraps. They might have something in a neutral colour on their reduced rolls stand or if not I can look in the remnant bin. I have some blue that I can use so next time I go up to do some sewing I will have a look at what blue scraps I have that I can use up.

I havent had time to read up on all the pages I missed out on just yet but I will have a good look over the next few days.

    Hope everyone is well xx

I didn't see a reduced rolls stand or remnants bin when I visited my local Dunhelm. I spent nothing - I have been to their shop in Derby and bought lots.

  • Hi Lesley

Thanks for that. Just mailed you. You have done all 4 things so can you leave another 3 comments so that you go into the "hat" 4 times and not just once!
Your table runner is lovely. I was having a nosey at it yesterday.

Ive been trying to sort through all my fabric and realised that alot of it is polycotton. Anyone got any ideas on what to make with it? As its thinner than 100% cotton, I dont find it does well with iron on interfacing so at a loss as to what to do with it all! Ive used it before with the sew in stuff but I still think it looks quite thin even though its patterned. Shouldnt have bought the damn stuff! xx

I have lots of poly cotton too. I have tried using it to dress my rag dolls but it doesn't look as good as cotton fabric so keep to that. It is okay for small doll clothes like Sindy/Barbie - used to make them for School fairs - years ago. I also knitted leg warmers for My Little Pony! Those were the days!
What about lingerie bags - you know - drawstring for travelling to keep your undies together in the suitcase. You would want thin fabric because of weight when travelling. Would the fabric work as bags for storing shoes/handbags?
Also what about making your own bias binding with it.

I am making my bias binding for my bunting. Do you sew it on in the correct way - one side then turn and stitch the other side? I have a book that says - slide the flags into the binding and stitch.
