Sorry handsewn I'm not sure about flickr - I use photobucket and they seem fine about posting links to your own photos on websites.

    Thanks :)

I echo others, just caught up on everyone's makes. I envy people who can make bags that don't fall apart! I am hankering after a satchel at the moment, just need to push myself into making one.

Just wondering if any of you lovely people know where I can get the following:

Old wooden bobbins - genuine vintage or repro, at decent prices?

Also, for the Flickr fans out there, if it ok to link your photos outside of Flickr? Or even post them into a thread like this?

    Thank you :)

Im pretty sure you can do whatever you like with Flickr. Well I do anyway. I used to link my Flickr photos to my blog and post on here too so I dont see why it would be a problem as its just a photo hosting site.

Do you mean bobbins like the cotton reels or do you mean the ones that were used in a loom thingymajig? (that look like the shape of a really thin boat? :o:o ) Ebay have the old wooden cotton reels if thats what you mean.

Aw thanks Hart, I love this thread (and how appropriate it's called a thread :rotfl: )

Can I ask opinions and advice please? Do you pre-wash fabric? And if so doesn't it create an almightly mess in your washing machine by unravelling? I keep reading on websites that you should pre-wash fabric to prevent shrinkage but don't want to ruin my machine with loose threads?

I rarely prewash my fabric (although probably should). You could always pop it in a pillowcase and tie a knot in the end so that any loose threads dont get stuck in your pipes. When I buy fabric Im always keen to start using it and dont have the patience to wash, dry and iron it first!

Glad you got your machine Georgiabay. Janome have a good reputation. Let us know how you get on with it. x

What lovely makes Midge and Hart.

I decided to get a Janome machine and it's just arrived after ordering it yesterday from Sewing Machines Direct. The free gift you get with it is amazing. I haven't unpacked it yet as I'm tidying up my sewing table.

SMD is fab. I got my Janome from them last year following a suggestion they gave me over the phone. Very happy with the machine ;) and yeah, wonderful free gifts too!:D

When I prewash my fabric I always put it in a laundry mesh. I do think that helps a little, although it will still fray a bit. HTH

when I prewash, if I know something is going to be washed,
    rather then drycleaned,
I just run both ends of the fabric through the overlocker before I put it in the washing machine.! Doesnt unravel then!.

    That's a great idea!

I always pre-wash because I tend to work with cotton and linen, which shrinks a fair bit. I read somewhere that pre-washing is less important with polyester and other man-mades that shrink less.

I got my overlocker from SMD and can't recommend them highly enough!

Hi all have been AWOL for a while - sorry. Some lovely bags made Hart and Midge.

Avstar - If I am making something designed for washing, such as a quilt, then I prewash but I do it by hand! I have had one lot of fabric, that as a result of washing I didn't use as I couldn'y stop the colour coming out and I was worried it would continue to bleed in a quilt.

I have sewn my bag and also finished the faux fur fabric for my son's curtains. I now have a large cushion cover to make from fur fabric, a patchwork fur fabric cushion cover and a bolster cover. Once I finish everything I will post a picture.

Off to tidy up now and then the machine out to do one of the cushion covers.

    Have a good evening all.

    Thanks all for kind comments.
