I'm in the market for a new sewing machine as I've let my daughter have mine.
I don't want an all singing all dancing one and don't think I'll ever make quilts but I'd like to try my hand at free motion sewing (as well as the usual stuff). Does anyone know what I should be looking for?
Also I'm a bit wary of computerised machines just because I think there's more to go wrong. Do you find that to be true?

Ive got this one which I adore and would recommend. Never had any problems with it since I got it. I didnt like the idea of a computerised machine initially but Im glad I got it now. As HMO said you just choose the stitch and it pretty much does everything for you. Also love that its a drop in bobbin so no fiddling around needed and has snap on feet and a free arm (although I would imagine most machines have that nowadays)

I would just be inclined to take the seam in, if there is enough fabric to allow it, without pulling. Take the seam from above the damage, and taper it back towards the side seam after you have encompassed all of the damaged area, and sew off.
However if this has been caused by wearing and it has been pulled at a stress point then it will not last at all. You can try to put a patch underneath it, but its probably not really worth it unless its a very expensive skirt that you need to salvedge.

    Hope that helps.

It is elasticated at the back so I should be able to figure out how to take the seam in. I don't know if it was caused by wear or if she ripped it when she had a fall because she tries not to tell me when she has had falls! Thanks for the advice I will see if she is particuarly bothered about saving it, if not I will cut it up and make a skirt for me :P

ive got this had it just over a year and love it details on my blog

its electronic but dead easy to use all the stitch designs hava number and you just punch that in and it sets everything for you but you can override it if you like to change the length and width of the stitch.

i dont use the foot pedal i use the start/stop button i find it alot easier and it has a speed control lever to you can go as slow or fast as you like

Just cut my middle finger on a tin lid, while I was clearing up in the kitchen. So thats all covered in plasters, and will hinder me during any sewing attempts this morning.
I have an order for another bag to do. So no excuses I really need to get to work. Molly's daughter is coming over to help with DGD to let me work. I am so lucky to have her help. The two of them can be ask thick as thieves at times. I am hoping she will not mind nipping to the co-op for me, as its only at the end of the road. They could go to the park, and into the shop on the way back. I only need milk and would like ham for lunch. But if I go in, I will come back with other things I would Like, which is not good when trying to save.
I still havent made the amelia bag dispite getting the pattern months and months ago. I have so many bag patterns now. I just seem to be making the same few though! Mind you as I get better at each one, the time to make them is shortened, and makes it somewhat more marketable/cost effective. I still do not think that any of us are working on the correct costings! Dispite having the formula from the Business links I just feel that I cannot charge for my time! Which is a bit stupid if I am going to try and make money, I need to make a wage!.:o
Happy sewing to all those who get the chance today, and hope that nobody's machines decided to snarl up, or break a needle.

    Hello everyone
Just thought i would introduce my self quickly as you have kindly accepted me on the fb group.
Just been looking at some of things you have all made, they really are BRILLIANT!
Love those butterfies. I was planning on doing some keyrings but just seem to have "forgotten" to get them done. Seeing yours now though i may get the keyrings out and get some donw.

I mentioned on fb im making my dress (nearly done) and have made some cushions to go in one of the areas where were getting married so will try and get some pics on here of those to show you. I used calico and printed them with fabric paint to match my colours.
Any how nice to "see" you all here and look forward to getting to know you all /reading your blogs.

Welcome, and happy reading/sewing etc. We are a friendly bunch all mad about sewing. From quilts, handbags to dresses. mending and what ever else takes the fancy.
It moves fast, and there is a sister thread No chat-sewing room, where loads of the links are put.
I spend hours looking at things, and going off on a tangent with links from other links, tutorials and videos etc etc. Far too long looking and not enough sewing.! :rotfl:

    Morning all!

Love all the makes, especially the little butterflies...they're lovely!

Just a quick visit before I get back to clearing out the conservatory to get it ready for decorating.

I had a very exciting and exhausting day at the Festival of Quilts on Satuday, there all day and loved it!! I took over 250 photos and spent a few pennies :o

I met Lisa Lam who loved my Organized Office bag I made from her book, The Bag Making Bible. She even took a picture of it! I got some helpful hints and bought some Amy Butler laminated material to make some bags. It is much thinner than vinyl and is lovely!!

Talk to loads of folk, the day was most inspiring.

Just had a call from the craft-centre lady who is offering me a job...she had cancelled our meeting today, but it is back on again!!! So now I have a mad dash to get things done before I zoom off.

    Have a great day everyone.
