does anyone have any ideas what i could use them for? please remember i am a novice with my 1st machine so something nice and easy please! lol
my first thought was table runners, but completly useless as i live in a shoebox with no table!!!
satin cushions are always really nice! and there's a dead easy way to sew them so you dont need a zip (bit like pillowcase) but if you're gonna cut satin, use pinking scissors as it frays!totally a tog!:D0 -
thank you for your ideas i never thought of cushions. yes they would be big enough to make two i think, possibly more (if my memory serves me right!) they could also be saved for gifts too
that was another question i had, what scissors should i be using for fabrics?
pinking scissors for satin (thank you postively) can these scissors be used on other fabrics?
is there anymore scissors i need for say cottons? etc?
and where is best to buy these?
also is there anything else i would need in the sense of tools?
sorry for all the questions, as i said i am a complete novice!0 -
A very kind lady has offered me a sewing machine. :j
It sounds quite basic (she said it was a Jones and did plain and zig zag) but in working order. The downside is, she lives quite far away and our car is out of action. So, there's possibly a sewing machine to play with if I can figure out a way to get it...0 -
Can I join you too please? Would like to make most of my gifts for next Christmas.
Did manage a patchwork shopper for Mum this year with a photo of the kids on photo printed fabric as the centre patch (all done in black and white) .
Have also just made some sock monkeys and have a quilt made from old jeans which has been on the go for the past two years and is only added to every time someone outgrows a pair!
Thanks for all the inspiration so far and hope I can contribute some too.!

Well, this thread spurred me into action yesterday and have started all my dress alterations. Off to a friends lunchtime today so she can check hem levels, as OH can´t do it.

Hi all,
Can I join you too. I found you all from the Christmas crafting thread. I am a complete sewing beginner too. Bought a machine a few months ago and busy teaching myself.
Abakhan fabrics is good for fabric and wool too.
Has anyone tried the simplicity patterns for dummies?? I'm looking for easy patterns to start with.
Thanks

taffetta frays too! so pinking for them...i used to have some fabric scissors that i got free with my sewing maching but my OH has been using them to cut up bacon and chicken:eek: so they're not as good anymore, i tend to just use a rotary cutter now as i find its much neater (but thats just cos i use little pieces of fabric a lot for quilting etc) but if you buy a rotary cutter you need a mat to cut on.(more esxpense!) i suppose it depends on what you're gonna make. i started off with just plain old scissors for a while and i got by OK.totally a tog!:D0 -

eek, more things to think about, must get pinking shears though. (and a printer that works so I can print off all the lovely patterns on the internet), trying to get the nerve to go into town for shopping, but not sure we have a crafty shop - any ideas whereelse i could get the shears from0

I bought a rotary cutter and mat recently and I was so impressed at how easily it cuts! I got a fiskars one as they seemed to be one of the main brands when I searched. I didn't notice different sizes really but maybe there are. The mat I got was just a general craft one with lots of different measurements on it.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
