  • I've fallen in love with the costumes in Turn of the Screw, imagine - a basket full of proper linen, and those blouses...(sigh)

Used to iron for £10 p/h so am a little unmotivated when it comes to my own!!
I employ my own method which I call 'lap ironing' - this involes shaking before going on the line and folding and smoothing on my lap when I get it in. It gets put in 2 piles - 1 pile can be put away immediately and the other pile gets a 'lick and a flick' with iron! Lifes far too short . . . .

I realise that my ironing habits are inherited from my Mum!

Had a clothing emergency recently and ended up wearing an an unironed t-shirt to work, first time ever I have done that in my life. Realised that if I get stuff out of the washing machine quickly and smooth it, stretch it out as much as possible when I hang it up to dry, that is going to make my life a lot easier, especially as OH only wears t-shirts (but gets through 3 a day).

I can't lie in bed (unlike my OH) so I get up and iron early on Sunday mornings and listen to radio or listen/watch TV while I'm doing it. Can get through loads then.

We moved to a house from flat and I found I didn't want piles of laundry around (we also used to have an ironing mountain on the spare bed) so the early morning ironing habit has been a lifesaver!

I never used to have problems getting the stuff washed, it was just the ironing I couldn't face - especially when looking at days' or weeks' worth of the stuff. Now when I am in enthusiastic mode I will sometimes iron stuff such as my shirts when they are still slightly damp, and let them finish drying off on the hanger - also makes them easier to iron as then they are self-steaming!

In the days of the ironing mountain I used to iron the most recent stuff on the pile first and stuff that had been there for so long it was bone dry /creased beyond help I used to bung in the washing machine on a speed wash to freshen it up and make it easier to iron. Not v economical, I know, but I know better now.

  • I would agree Mazin that early morning ironing is best, it leaves me feeling very virtuous & good for the rest of the day! Yes, I would prefer to be asleep but until DS2 learns to love his cot instead of my bed I have no choice.

Today he cried at 6.30am so I went to get him but instead of putting him into our bed I took him downstairs and stuck him in his highchair with milk and toast (which he informed me was YUCK several emphatic toddler times!) I ironed for about 20 mins, cleared what was there and hopefully set myself up for a good nights sleep tonight because he'll be too tired to wake at some unsociable hour.

    Happy New Year all!
I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.
