  • Absolutely amazing cake babyplum, love the little ghosts, the whole thing is brilliant ~ gotta agree with Karen that it has to be worth way more than £20!!

Ds has been sat on my lap while I was looking at it and says he wants that cake for his birthday (in January!) so I reckon you should go pro and set up a mail order service by then ;)

    Haha! Thanks!

I'm not convinced a cake would travel well by mail order! ;)

  • Just found this thread and have been utterly enthralled with the cakes and pictures on here. Im seriously thinking of starting a small business, at the moment its all just for friends and family, but Im not sure where to start!! Does anyone have any tips or ideas??:)
  • Karen your halloween cake is amazing!! £20 is nowhere near enough. I would expect to pay around the £60.00 mark on this if not more!! it must have fed about 30 people at least. Your friend got a massive bargain there. Such a lot of work went into it!!

Just wondered if you girls had any ideas how to make a fondant (ready to roll) crown? I have made one before which i was happy with but not extatic!! Want something really WOW!! has anyone made one before? xxx

how about using flower paste for making your crown, its sets harder than sugarpaste.

    This looks quite impressive.
  • Funnily enough moon this is the tutorial i used last time. It came out ok but took so long to dry and I need 2 - 1 for Friday one for Saturday!! I don't want to use sugar flower paste because it is so much more expensive. I could try 50/50 but again its still an awful lot of expense on a crown!! Any ideas how i can dry the fondant out quickly?

  • Hmmmm, no not really. I'm not a sugar-craft expert by any stretches of the imagination, quite frankly I loathe the stuff, but tbh I reckon you'll struggle to get fondant to dry by Friday, particuarly something upright like a crown... I may well be wrong though!!

    Good luck!

You can use sugarpaste with either tylo powder or gum trag added, you only need a teaspoon to 250g of sugarpaste. It works just the same as flower paste but a lot cheaper. You do need to leave it overnight if possible but I have used it after a few hours and it's been alright.

I'm really getting into modelling with sugar paste, I made some halloween decs and a cricket bat, ball and wickets for a cake. Today I made some cat heads. I'm not very good at it but suppose everybody has to start somewhere :D

College is going very well, we covered our fruit cakes in marzipan last night, will put the first layer of royal icing on next week. We started run outs too which I thought I would hate but are actually loads of fun.

Was it babyplum who did the halloween cake? It's brilliant and way undercharged at £20! It's so easy to register as self employed and get approved by the EHO, then you can charge real prices! :)
