She wants to take it to the next level now and make a bit of money on the side instead of just gifting them.
The question I have is regarding the premises inspection - ie. our kitchen. The thing that worries her is that we have cats. Would this automatically preclude us from passing the inspection?
No this would not preclude you from passing the local Environmental Health Inspection.
I know from personal experience that people who have cats & dogs at their home produce foods for sale.
BUT you would have to show them that you are taking all the necessary steps to prevent any contamination of your produce.
One stray cat hair found by a member of the public in your produce will be the end of her little business.
Obviously keep the cats out of sight on the inspection day !!
I run my own business in the food industry & when you watch programmes such as Come Dine With Me etc & you see cats walking on worktops / on tables / it makes my stomach turn !!0 -

I just wondered what cleaning priducts I am meant to use, is it anything anti baterial or anything specific?
I need to completely gut, clean and re-wallpaper my kitchen before I even put the forms in but I'm so excited. I'm not just doing cakes though as biscuits are my favouites.
Can you tell me what council you contacted? I want to get started too but didnt realise i would need to go to college to get my food hygiene cert (I'm in East Lothian).:j0 -

Then you should, assuming you want to operate in East Lothian, contact that council.

Hi ladies I have an order for 50 cupcakes for a wedding in august they want handmade large roses to decorate. They want them in liliac and "cadburys" purple I can colour or even buy the lilac florist paste but can't find the right colour for the cadburys purple. Can anyone help or offer any advice please
I have exactly the same order for a wedding cake in May - "Cadbury" purple. I practiced with some spare sugarpaste and used squires kitchen purple and plum paste colours, mixed. The plum isn't far off anyway if I remember. I think I may have used a little red, too (it was a couple of months ago and I was daft enough not to write it down at the time! At least I know it's possible though)
Hi all
Just in the process of starting my cake business and I was wondering - for those of you who have a cake business run from home, how do you go about tracking your ingredients/income/expenditure? I'm putting my spreadsheet together but not sure how much detail you have to go into. Someone mentioned you have to track your ingredients, just sounds like a lot of work so any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
I'm not up and operational yet so not particularly active about my record keeping but I remember reading the food hygiene paperwork that I ordered from the Food Standards website and I believe that you have to record batch numbers and expiry dates of each of your ingredients - pretty much everything. I set up a spreadsheet that has all ingredients/sundries in a column and then supplier, price per unit, expiry, batch details, etc. If you then enter the amount used of each item you can easily calculate costs in the same sheet. I've started tagging my hourly rate on to the bottom of this, too, so that I get an idea of what to charge, all in one place.:jDebt Free By Xmas 2013 #010 £16,660.26/£16,660.26 100% paid, DFD 25/06/13!:j0 -
What a great thread this cash from baking is. I am too thinking about baking for cash. I'm going to start from scratch learning how to bake lovely cakes. I did a chef course back in 1996 and I can cook but baking Is a different proposition. Well done to those who have made a success from it0

Hi all was looking for some advice, I am currently a full time mum who loves cake decorating and am looking to start doing this from home, I have contacted enviro health a number of times but can never get through to an actual environmental health officer and the information they keep sending me is not the most helpful. I'm really wondering what to expect from there visit, our kitchen has seen better days although obviously is kept clean and as tidy as any house with two young children in.
Would be grateful of any advice, I'm in the Portsmouth area.0 -

Hi peoples! I have done exactly the same thing, it's such a big area at the moment with customers from all over. What I did struggle with is having the right items in stock at the right time.
I use The Cake Decorating Company for everything I need, they have a huge range of products.
Check out their website: thecakedecoratingcompany .co.uk
