Thats something I still find really difficult, getting the fondant to go on smooth . I got myself a few cake decorating books from the library and watched lots of videos on you tubeMake sure you are using good quality fondant, the supermarket stuff is rubbish! I use regal ice from my local sugarcraft shop rolled out about 1/4" thick. I also use cornflour to roll it out but you have to be quick or the fondant will dry out and crack. Make sure you only use a thin coat of buttercream under the fondant otherwise that can cause problems when trying to get it smooth. Are you using proper smoothers for your fondant? These are vital for a smooth finish. I find that even if a cake looks a bit bumpy when it's first covered if I just keep smoothing it as the fondant dries it usually looks fine when it's done. I'm self taught and no expert but I hope that helps;)
I have bought an icing smoother so will try again. Thank you for your help0 -

Thanks but I can't take credit for the design. I just tweaked it to suit;)

Re cracking, best thing to do is be patient and continue to stroke and rub your cake for ages! Honestly, it will smooth over the most awful messes if you give it time.
Sugarpaste is much easier to roll out in warm weather.Armchair shopper and cook - albeit with a ready meal on my lap and "plates of meat" in a foot spa!!!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -

You really have to do it because you enjoy it as I don't think it will make you rich;) I do it more as a hobby and not as a job though.
Agree, I stopped making birthday cakes to sell as I was taking 12-18hrs to bake and decorate them. It's all far to stressy doing it last minute so cake is fresh too. Love looking at them though.Armchair shopper and cook - albeit with a ready meal on my lap and "plates of meat" in a foot spa!!!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
