  • Just passing through here, but thought I would add this bit of info. On Sunday I decided to take some stuff to a car-boot and thought I would entice people to my stall by selling cupcakes (40p each/3 for £1) I also came up with the idea of buying some of those little "mini-bite" things from the supermarket and offering one of those free with every purchase. Within minutes of setting up my table, the Market Manager had come up to me and told me to remove the cakes as it wasn't allowed at car-boot sales!! This particular venue is actually a market in the week! Another venue nearby has a Sunday market and car-boot combined and I've seen loads of people selling cakes & sweets. However, the mini-bites were allowed to remain as I wasn't actually selling them they were being given away free - where's the logic in that?? Wouldn't have minded so much but I made loads and it cost me a fortune in ingredients, when I was trying to make much needed cash

Haven't read through this thread, so hope I'm not the only person ignorant about such matters and this info helps :)

I am not sure about the rules for this kind of thing but I am pretty sure that you need some kind of insurance at the very least if you are going to sell foodstuffs a public event. My friends ran a charity stall that sold cakes at our local village fair and they needed insurance before they were allowed to do this. Does anyone have any thoughts around this?
  • Hi All

Just wondered if anyone has had any experience in dealing with Southend-on-Sea in Essex county council with regards to getting passed with Environmental Health? I really want to set up my own business but am a bit scared by all the council stuff!

    Hope someone can help.

Slight change of subject. I was looking for idea for xmas baking and packaging and came across this http://www.joyofbaking.com/ChristmasCookies.html#video . Is it me or had she been on the cooking sherry prior to the recording, not exactly well rehersed. Really made me laugh though. Christmas cookie gift giving ideas.. she basically says add a bow or buy some packaging.;)
There are actually some nice recipes further down the page however.

Hi ladies, I am in the process of setting up a cupcake business and have the horrible task of working out my prices. I only bake with butter and free range eggs etc and after working out how much this costs I'm not sure if people will pay the prices I have in mind! Local competion are selling for £1 a cupcake but I really don't see how they make a profit after all you have to add in your time, cases, boxes, gas/electric etc. Also do any of you sell cupcakes at xmas fayes etc? Thanks xx

    1. Perhaps people won't pay the prices you have in mind.

    2. Perhaps £1 is all the local market will pay.

    3. Perhaps they aren't making a profit, or are using very cheap and low quality ingredients, or are pricing low to deter or wipe out any other competition so that when they have a monopoly they increase the price.

I think you may just have to test the water at the price you have in mind.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • If you sell your cupcakes at fayres how do you package them if they brought a single cupcake to take away. I don't want to spend a fortune on pakaging, I have seen the pods but they will bump the price up alot!
  • brilliant start selling cakes at work and go 1 up every 6 months and there you go a few extra quid to treat yourself
