Don't know if anyone is still reading this or not, but I have a question. My local council owns several venues that have kitchens, bars etc. to hire for functions. If I wanted to bake {to sell} at my local market {also within the same council area} how would it work if I hired their venue (kitchen) out weekly?? Surely they are already up to spec. if they are allowing people to hire them out. I could ask Environmental Health to check my kitchen, but after reading all of this, it seems to be too much trouble + I have 2 cats. I am thinking that it would be easier to pay the £35.00-£40.00 for the venue, overnight.....bake myself to death, then go to the market the following day. Ideas? Suggestions? Everyone keeps telling me to open my own bakery etc, but there is no £££ to do that and an industrial unit costs too much as well......

    Hi all

Just in the process of starting my cake business and I was wondering - for those of you who have a cake business run from home, how do you go about tracking your ingredients/income/expenditure? I'm putting my spreadsheet together but not sure how much detail you have to go into. Someone mentioned you have to track your ingredients, just sounds like a lot of work so any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
  • Hello....

Sorry I can't really be of any help boxer16, but as I am in the same position as you (well considering starting out) I too would love any advice on this and other areas....

With regards to tracking ingredients I'm sure it's batch numbers, expiry dates/ where purchased....I think it's a health and safety thing incase there is an outbreak of some kind....(ie dodgy eggs causing upset tummies....)

I would also be interested to know how everyone 'runs' their business - ie do you bake to order? or do certain things on certain days? do you use a system to make yourself more efficient?

    Kind regards,

    mrs b

  • Hi all, Mrs MikeTaff has completely been bitten by the cupcake and cake baking bug and is now starting to turn out some fantastic cakes for friends and families birthdays, weddings, christening and Xmas etc.

She wants to take it to the next level now and make a bit of money on the side instead of just gifting them.

The question I have is regarding the premises inspection - ie. our kitchen. The thing that worries her is that we have cats. Would this automatically preclude us from passing the inspection?
