I am planning to make some cupcakes this weekend. Been dying to try out my new muffin cases and muffin tin. hehe

I am also gonna hopefully make a start on the decorations for the 2 halloween cakes i am making for next weekend. Need to make lots of little flower paste bats, spiders, pumpkins and ghosts. :)

Sorry to interrupt but there seems to be a lot of wisdom on here. I want to make a collection of really good cupcakes for a big party - can anyone recommend a suitable cookbook (just one - trying to thin out my collection) preferably not American which would give me ideas both for the cakes them selves and the toppings ?

  • Hi Everyone!

I've had a good weekend, my friend collected an order of 24 cakes for her mum yesterday and she was really pleased with them!! She went off with some business cards to pass around so you never know might get some more work.

Had a bit of a mare with the boxes I'd ordered though - the cakes wouldn't fit in the inserts even though the cake cases and boxes were from the same site. I'm sure the cases are standard size so can't think what went wrong unless my tins are too wide so they spread out too much whilst cooking?? Can I ask what tins you guys use? I just have a couple of cheap muffin ones to be honest from the supermarket so could probably do with getting some better ones.

I think you may be using 'bun' tins, which are shallower and will take a larger cupcake/muffin case but do spread out... you need a deeper muffin tray which has straighter sides, making a deep but compact cake. The base should be 5cm and 3.5cm ish deep. I've found that it is a lot of trial and error to be honest, get the tray right but then you have to get the cases right!

I have Muffin tins, both bought from Tesco and Asda. They are 5cm W and about 3.5/4cm deep. Some cupcake/muffin cases are not good at holding the shape. Dr Outekers I find to be too thin and dont hold the shape, prefer Asdas, or I get fancier ones from lakland/hobbycraft.

I've been looking back to see a post by Neneromanova about an Ultimate Fondant Application System - it was sheets of vinyl you rolled your sugarpaste between, but for the life of me can't find it. I was just going to check the prices she'd put as I think she'd phoned them direct for info. It must be my old bad eyesight but can't find it even when I use the search thread thing. Did no-one else fancy one of these - I thought it looked brilliant. I've googled the name but it says that the online store will open soon and don't think it is open yet. Being a bit of a meanie (aka good moneysaver) with my phonebill not wanting to phone USA!

    Happy Baking everyone![/QUOTE]

Help! Am making a Halloween cake and the cauldron i have made (out of cake) to go on the top is much bigger and heavier than i thought it would be. I don't have any dowels. Will it be ok sat on top do you think?

The actual cake is 8" round and i made the cake for the cauldron in a small pyrex bowl. I plan to cover it in black fondant.

    Help???
