  • Grrrrrrrr.... Is it just me or does anyone else get mildly frustrated (or even completely p'd off!!) at some peoples seeming lack of comprehension that it actually takes quite a lot of time and effort (not to mention dosh!) to produce a beautifully decorated cake or cupcakes??

It's my neice's 16th b'day tomorrow and s-i-l has left me a message on m-i-l's mobile  to ask me to knock up some chocolate cupcakes for her! Now whilst I don't have a problem at all with making them per se I do kind of resent the assumption that I can just "knock them up" with next to no notice. I'd have liked to put some thought in to what kind of colours and decorations she'd like, and if necessary order some, rather than just have to use what I happen to have to hand - don't like doing things by halves... And ,errr, shockingly enough I do actually have other things going on too!!

:o Ok, rant over. Thanks for listening if you got this far ;)

Btw, Karen, have you tried You Tube for patchwork cutter tutorials?
I'm gonna attempt chocolate bubble wrap and chocolate transfers for afore-mentioned cupcakes later (hopefully minus a tetchy 3 yr old!) and that will be my first port of call.

    Yeah it bugs me too!

Someone at work asked me the other day "How much do you charge for a cake?" and i said it depends on the size and decorations, etc. I explained about the Halloween cake i made for a colleague and said that she gave me £20 just to cover all the ingredients. Then she said "oh, don't worry. It was only a little token for my daughter's birthday".

 Is £20 a lot for a handmade birthday cake then is it! I didn't even make any profit on that halloween cake, let alone the time and energy it took to create it. I felt like telling her to sod off! ;)

I have never used those patchwork cutters either and don't really know how they work.

I keep meaning to ask about my 'Tappit' letter cutters. I have these and i find it really difficult to get the letters out without completley mangling them. What am i doing wrong?

I completely understand your rant, some people dont appreciate the time and effort it takes to make something stunning and tasty.

ive used tappits, i think the trick is to roll your sugarpaste with tylo added very very thinly, almost see-through, i dust cornflour on my tappits, press firmly, remove any excess and give it a good wallop...lol. but i understand your frustration, it takes practice and alot of patience.

I've got that same tappit and I find it hard work, i've got a plainer one and it's a doddle, works perfectly with normal sugarpaste. I add tylo powder to a sugarpaste, leave it overnight or as long as I can if needed same day and use that for the curly tappit.

Patchwork cutters are a lot like tappits, you need flower paste or mexican paste.

It drives me mad when people make comments about "knocking up a cake" or something like that. You don't "knock up" a cake, you work really flippin hard on it!

I hate it when people compare my cakes to supermarket ones, asking why mine are more expensive. Er because I use real products and not chemicals!

Right better go get ready, we're decorating our christmas cakes at college, we put the marzipan on last week and started practising run outs, think we're putting the first layer of royal icing on tonight. Run outs are great btw, google them and have a go :)

Just to add, the first time I used tappits, I cried because I really couldn't do it! Then a lovely lady in a cake shop showed me and it's not been too bad since. I'd suggest if you're making the letters in advance, make spares as they are really breakable once they go hard. I find just giving the tappit a sharp smack on the edge of the unit works, they fly off sometimes though :rotfl:
