    Hi Guys

I have been alurker on this thread for a few days. I am quite new to this, but have been baking for a while now! This is such a fab site with great info and well done to you all for doing it. I am hoping to start with cupcakes alongside my job and then see how it goes. I am also doing a cake decorating course and hope eventually to be able to make wedding cakes, etc - that's the plan anyway.

I have just popped into Wilko's at lunch and brought this cake stand if any of you are interested:

They also had plain white ones as well.
  • Loads of baking stuff in Lidl from Thursday :j
  • love that cake stand nicksta27...oh heck, what with that and the suggestions from Essexgirl and Moominmamma I can see the credit card getting another hit!!! Thanks for sharing - always good to know when cake stuff is about at good prices:j
  • Love this thread more and more but considering it's on moneysaving expert it could have me spending an awful lot of money lol.

Love the Ikea cake stand I have been ordering a few pretty vintage ones of ebay and have found some bargains. Also ordered a polka dot tablecloth off there earlier to show case all my creations!

Does anyone have any ideas how I can transport my cakes to the markets I'm doing? I have seen some cupcake caddys that seem very expensive and will only carry about 12 full size cupcakes. I'm thinking more like 150 lol!! Any suggestions?!

I have found the following information, just by trial and error

you have small muffin cases - 3cm diameter base x 2cm high ( too much hassle) never make SMALL cakes

Fairycakes are our small sized cases you get in all supermarkets

Cupcake and muffin the difference is the height of the wrapper.

Cupcake cases - have to get online - 5cm diameter base x 3.5cm high
Muffin cases I used at the start but these are too tall. 5cm diameter base x 4.5cm high

I prefer the 3.5cm height makes a nice size for the cakes, but I often use the muffin cases from Asda as they are there and cheaper.

    hope this helps :T

    Sorry, me again :(

I've just looked at my cases i have in the cupboard and I bought some cases in sainsburys which are 5cm base, 3.9cm high and 8cm across the top.

Are these cupcakes or just smaller muffin cases?

They all vary and its been trial and error for me, if I want big cupcakes I use the ASDA or TESCO ones which range in sizes. The photo below, the coloured ones are cupcake cases the i got from hobbycraft, the white one behind them are Dr Oteker (spelling)

I got a box from Asda, only cost £2 and it carries about 16 cupcakes, they would fit another layer in but obviously can't do that if they're decorated.

Tom Holmes charges between £45 - £90, depending on how complex you want your design.

I've uploaded mine to my facebook and twitter pages now, just going to go and add it to my website. I love it :D
