Yep thats right neneromanova! We don't generaaly do any pre-reg visits even when requested as we are far too understaffed. Just register.....they can't turn up to a home address either. Law requires us to give 24 hours notice to domestic premises
They appeared at my house with NO appointment, he left a card. I missed him twice cause I work 4 days....... when I phoned I made an appointment, and shouldnt have bothered cause it was a NO again anyway. This was a month ago.
Im going to leave it for now, but good luck to others.Saving 2.00 coinsGrocerys set to 40.00 pwBeing Thrifty0 -
Cookie82 - can I also check something with you. If someone does register and then wants to supply cakes to a cafe, can they do this?
When I phoned the EHO to check about registration (and was given the same info as Esmer ie your kitchen won't be up to scratch and we don't encourage home bakers) I told her that a local cafe had been interested in taking my cakes. I was planning to do cupcakes, slices, scones etc. Once again though the EHO put the kybosh on this - she said that each cake would have to be separately packaged and labelled (a bit time consuming with a heap of small cakes, methinks). I suggested that I would print out a list of the ingredients for each type of cake to ensure that the cafe had information on the exact ingredients of each cake. She said that this wouldn't be enough and they really wouldn't want a home-baker supplying a cafe as this would need to come from a commercial kitchen though they might be happy if I only made 1 or 2 cakes a week! I'm pretty sure most of the local cafe's don't bake their own cakes, but they don't look mass-produced either.
Maybe, selling onto another party for a third party to consume is a totally different ballgame - I know that a lot of this is to safeguard people with allergies, but I thought that giving the printed sheets of ingredients would solve this.
Any thoughts from you would be much appreciated.0 -
Hi think positive
I am afraid that is right....the regulations are slightly different if your selling to another business. However the labellign regulations are not that difficult and you would prob be able to do it easily. The only way you could get round not doing the labels would be to ask the cafe if you could use their kitchen to preprae the cakes. Then this would be classed as 'open food' which would not require any labelling.
If you wanted to label the foods this is what you need to include:- the name of the food
- a list of ingredients (including food allergens)
- the amount of an ingredient which is named or associated with the food
- an appropriate durability indication (e.g. 'best before' or 'use by')
- any special storage conditions or instructions for use
- the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or retailer
- the place of origin (where failure to do so might mislead)
Esmer I am sorry you have had so much difficulty with your local EHO........giving us a bad name!! As I said before if you change your mind and wish to do it I would phone up and speak to a manager and question what you was told before.....quote the law if need be so they can't fob you off. I am all for home bakers personally.....with the economy how it is we should be encourgaing businesses and most of the time peoples homes are far nicer than some of the commercial kitchens I see!

I've been running a tea room for two seasons and people have asked for my recipies (ie write a book) I was also thinking of baking and selling by mail order as I live in a very rural area. I've had alot of feedback (no pun intended) by customers on my gluten free cakes and thought about going down that avenue, but again its how to start and would I beable to make a decent living through it
Good luck to all who venture down this route and I've learnt alot through the other replies.

Thanks Cookie82 - that's really helpful info. Just brilliant as it is hard to find definite answers anywhere on this stuff. I'm sure this info will be helpfu to others thinking of supplying other places as well.
I'm afraid I couldn't do the option of baking in the cafe's kitchen. I really need to be able to do the baking at home as I have young kids. Thank you so much for the list of information for the labelling option. I wish my EHO had mentioned this sort of thing rather than say it couldn't be done. Perhaps if she had agreed to check over a couple of draft listings to see that I had all the sort of information she needed. I mean the cakes won't change that much. The ingredients etc will always be the same - only the use by/best before will change for each batch.
It is fantastic that you are supporting the home bakers! I think most home-bakers take a pride in what they bake.
Esmer - are you tempted to have another go! It sounds as if your EHO was happy with your kitchen generally but that you didn't comply with their exacting rules. For the extra sink - did you think of getting one of those portable ones. You might be able to pick up a cheap second hand one. They are a bit like a big flask of hot water but with a sink at the bottom. Might strike one of the hurdles off your list with your EHO. Maybe if you can think of an alternative solution to each problem they raised they might let you go ahead.
Sahra - those cake pops look delicious! Thanks for posting the link.
Neneromanova - I think you just ask your local Environmental Health Office for a form. You fill it in and return it to them, but think you have to wait 28 days before you actually start baking for business. Hope it all goes really well for you.0 -
Hi Naturegirl -welcome to the thread. Wow - running your own tea-room! That would be my dream come true. Sounds as if you are making a roaring success of it as well!
I think the main labelling issue is when you are supplying someone who is then selling it to someone else. However, if you were doing cakes etc through mail order you could be belt and braces and add in that labelling information as well to make sure you were covered.0 -

Just wanted to make a recommendation for a logo designer, I didn't go with Ella Announcements as after her offering a reduced price, she never got back to me
Was quite gutted as I loved her designs.
Anyhoo I went with Tom Holmes Graphics He was recommended to me through somebody on Twitter. My logo took a couple of weeks from start to finish and I love it, it's so me and he is extremely reasonably priced. Think happy & you'll be happy

Just in case anyone wanted one, in Morrisons this morning they had deep muffin tins for £4 instead of £6 for the Prestige ones and Morrisons own were £3.50. Each had 12 holes in them.
And they had some nice cake tins on offer.
Babyplum, nice cake stand. Did you see the 3 tier ones in Ikea? I walked past a display with one on. DH was with me so I didn't stop to gaze lol.0
