Hi ladies have been lurking on here for a few day reading every page and scribbling lots of notes. Finally decided am going to be brave and start cake making/decorating business. EH coming quite soon but man on phone said he only looking for a clean kitchen and cakes very low risk so couldnt imagine there being any problem.
One thing wanted to ask you is can i pick whatever I want as my business name??? Want to have Cakes by Kirsty. Do i have to register it or anything? Dont want to be ordering business cards or leaflets and then find cant have that name.
    Thanks xx

kirsty - all i did was google to see if anything came up, then got a free email address through aol and i use vistaprint for my website as i'm a bit of a technophobe and wouldnt know where to start building my own and they have all the templates etc. but to be honest found a free ad under gumtree to be the best for generating orders.

You don't need to register the name you can call your business what you like. Do a google search to see if the name is already being used then go to 123 reg and see if the website name you want is available as the business name.
You must first of all register as self employed through HMRC then all the equipment and business cards you are buying before you set up trading you will able to claim for against your profit.

Get checked by the Environmental Health before buying stationery though, I nearly paid £65 for my logo before i've been checked then thought, what if they say no??

I'm going to ring them tomorrow, got my kitchen all decluttered (mostly) and cleaned. Really hope they say yes. I haven't been as excited and motivated about anything as much as I am about doing this, i'll be gutted if they say no. :(

Just finished my second ever stall! Only took 75 cupcakes as I wasn't sure how busy it would be (family fun day on a local farm) but ended up selling out, so feeling chuffed to bits at the moment. Didn't get charged for the stall either which was an even bigger bonus!

There's some more photos up on my Facebook group (link in my profile) if anyone wants to have a look :)

Am back with another question how do you work out costings for cupcakes? Getting myself all confused with how much a batch costs me to make and then each individual cupcake. Going to do an online H&H course this week and sent form to council to register a food business. had a wee play around on vistaprint with business cards but scared to order any til council man been.
Bluefire your stall and cakes looks so professional, think thats where i am aiming long term but long way to go yet!!
