Sounds like a good plan to me Hayley, it would daunt me too! I would leave the flesh smooth, instead of covering in white sugarpaste, why dont you colour it flesh tone and then add the red. black and white, just an idea.

Oh yeah that does make more sense, thanks hun! :) She doesn't want it until the 14th but I think i'm going to bake the cake tomorrow, says in my book that madeira cakes can last two weeks in the fridge? Do you think it will be ok? I've hired a huge tin, so makes sense to use it before I take it back on Tuesday.

ive no idea how long cakes last in the fridge, you could freeze it, that would be fine too. ive got an order for hen party and 50th birthday party cupcakes for Oct, will post pics.

I've been asked to make this mickey mouse cake....

I am terrified, I think I should've said no to be honest but I just want as much practice as I can get at the moment. Anyways, this is what i'm planning on doing, if anybody can see where I might go wrong or have any tips, I would be really grateful!

I'm going to bake a 12" round madeira cake
Cut around the template I have printed
Cover the whole cake in buttercream
Cover the whole cake in white sugarpaste
Cut out the features using black/red/flesh sugarpaste
Stick them on using edible glue

How will I make the flesh part look all bumpy? Do you think it would look ok if I left it smooth? The cake doesn't have to be exact I guess.

    Thanks x

i would just pipe straight onto the cake, cutting out all the sugarpaste bit. the flesh bit is piped using a small star, think iced gems:)

I'm really bad at piping, think it'll look a lot neater just to cut out. Thanks though :)

Hiya - you say you are bad at piping but i did a 'powerpuff girl' cake with the icing piped on in little stars as nat21luv says and it is easy (the little stars cover any mistakes and overall gives a good finish). They dont have to be evenly sized - although that is better but if you did muck it up you can just scrape it off and start again. As you can do it in buttercream it also means you dont have to put buttercream anywhere else either. Good luck.
  • Another vote for buttercream here, I made this for ds's last birthday and it was, quite literally, a piece of cake :)

  • Hello everybody!

My husband came across this thread and thought it'd be an interesting read for me. I started up my baking company back in October, mostly just selling to friends and family at the time. Unfortunately, I'm not able to sell at my local market as there's already countless other bakeries and I don't see much point selling in a saturated market. I supply a cafe, am hoping to supply a lot more (have had several enquiries) if we get a car anytime soon, and doing private orders beyond my social circle now. I'm hoping to do competitions soon advertised on Facebook/Twitter (there are strict rules about doing competitions ON your Facebook page so I'll probably post mine on my website and link to it on Facebook page) in hopes free tastings of my product will result in future orders.

It's interesting to see the experience everyone else has had/is having. Hopefully I can provide help and advice where possible.
