Is there anyone on here who lives in the Newcastle area who makes cakes? Ive had a private FB message from someone who loves my cakes but she lives far too far from me. I will pass on details if anyone can help. Karen x

has anyone got any ideas how i can start to generate business? i havent got a portfolio and i dont want to just start making cakes for the hell of it just to get a picture, what a waste! im in the process of starting up the facebook page but only have one picture of some of my cakes! any idea where i can start? my business cards arrive in 19 days(not counting!:D) but i need to state generating business asap.

Back from holiday - sad because I'm not in the lovely sunshine anymore but happy because I can now start focusing on cakes

I'm just looking at the form for EHO and hope to send it off shortly however, someone has mentioned to me that as I'm going to be baking from home, my house (or atleast, the house I live in) will be classed as a buisness property and will be subject to business tax rates. Is anyone aware of this who have been through the EHO process? Or can anyone advise?

One of the first and most important decisions to be made when you start your business is the legal structure.

There are two main options open you – either to set up a limited liability company and become a director and employee of that, or to be a self-employed sole trader.

Financially, the biggest difference between the two is how you are assessed for tax by Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC). Limited companies are legal entities in their own rights, and are assessed on their turnover and profit with a company tax return.

Sole traders are self-employed and must complete a self assessment tax return every year. Unlike being an employee, you won’t be taxed on your income. Instead you will be allowed to deduct business expenses and be taxed on the profit you have made.

not to worry, your a sole trader working from home so as long as you register as self employed you'll be fine.
