Another vote for buttercream here, I made this for ds's last birthday and it was, quite literally, a piece of cake :)

    Hello everybody!

My husband came across this thread and thought it'd be an interesting read for me. I started up my baking company back in October, mostly just selling to friends and family at the time. Unfortunately, I'm not able to sell at my local market as there's already countless other bakeries and I don't see much point selling in a saturated market. I supply a cafe, am hoping to supply a lot more (have had several enquiries) if we get a car anytime soon, and doing private orders beyond my social circle now. I'm hoping to do competitions soon advertised on Facebook/Twitter (there are strict rules about doing competitions ON your Facebook page so I'll probably post mine on my website and link to it on Facebook page) in hopes free tastings of my product will result in future orders.

It's interesting to see the experience everyone else has had/is having. Hopefully I can provide help and advice where possible.

I take it your not in Lanarkshire area of Scotland. I think I have to move area before I can have my business.

Glad you are doing well, is your website in your profile so we can all take a look at your cakes?

    Thanks :)

  • Awwww, thanks Karen and Esmer :)

It's only now that it strikes me that he only seems to have two legs, lol! Still, he tasted scrummy and I'm a cupcake girl at heart so out of my comfort zone with a "novelty" cake...

While I'm posting can I just say a big "thank you" to all the posters on this thread ~ I'm finding it really interesting and informative and loving the pictures :T

By the way, the dinosaur cake is from "Birthday Cakes for Kids" by Annie Rigg, fab book, as is her latest one, "Decorating Cakes and Cookies"

Anyone one else recommend any baking books? I've got a bit of an obsession with them. Oh, and glitter. And sprinkles. And pretty cupcake cases... Gotta be cheaper than a designer handbag though :rotfl:

You know I completely forgot about getting the food hygiene cert! The EHO is coming round Tuesday so once I get the all clear from her, I will get it done!

Where did everybody else do theirs? Just googled it and loads of sites came up, don't want to get ripped off.
