I just finished Santa. Thank you to you all for providing me with the encouragement to just get it done. I'll go take a picture now...

Edit to add: I decided to go for metalic thread instead of beads as when I started stitching them on they didn't look right to me. Below is the finished article. I wasn't too far off with my estimate of 4 hours. I think it's taken 4.5

I'm going to check my threads now and order what I need for my giraffe project.

My mouseloft kits arrived yesterday and also ordered some more thread for the Love Poem sampler as I am rapidly running out 55p a skein with free P&P :j
Where do you buy it for 55p a skein delivered? I could do with some red for xmas cards, atm i'm doing patterns that don't contain red which is not an easy task with christmas :rotfl:

Elliep, its amazing congrats on finishing it, it will look fab framed are you doing it yourself or getting it done professionally?

I don't think I'm going to frame it for this Christmas. Partly because I can't really afford to and partly because it would be too painful to have up at the moment. I'll get it done for next year though I think and I haven't decided whether to go professional or just to do it myself. I might take it to the brilliant man in my local market and see what he can do and how much it would cost.

For those who were interested, Santa was featured in issue 177, Christmas 2009 of Cross Stitch Collection. He was designed by Joan Elliott and I have the chart in electronic form that I am happy to nudge to anyone who PMs me.

you know what? i dont actually know what i do! is that odd? i just stitch in rows either to fill an area, say 10 squares by 10 or the shape of the bit usually as i havent done anything huge. i just tootle along doing the stitches where they'll go, mostly trying to remember that if i'm moving on to a new bit and just come out of a hole i can't go back down it right away as it'll undo!:o and really dont know about this 'top to bottom' thing you're talking about.:o

Oh thank goodness!! Not just me then, I was thinking I was a right weirdo:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I had never thought about it before and when I stitched earlier I paid attention and I don't have a definite method. It changes whether I work to the right or the left and depending on which 'arm' of the stitch I am doing.

Whatever's fastest does for me :)

    Well done!!! :T:T:T

It truly is a stunning piece, and I think the metallic threads are a great substitute for beads :)

I don't need to PM you, it is already on my to do list (eventually!) ;)

I really hope you do get it framed ellie - you need to think not what it used to represent but what it now does - the support from your online stitching community:j

I've been looking at the haed site and some day I'm going to do one of their designs once I have more experience. I was just wondering has anyone done a haed design before and how long it takes?

They vary a LOT depending on what design you go for - do you have any designs in mind which you would like to do?

You can get ones which are listed as 'QS' which are basically Quick Stitch designs...well, they say quick but they are still pretty big! It is a section taken from a larger design so you don't have so much background to stitch

I have completed these two HAED's this year:

'Vision at the Lake' (400x300 stitches) was started in Sep 2009 and took 7 months to complete,, doing some stitching every day (and going slightly c0ckeyed at times in the process) :rotfl:

    March2010011.jpg

'Stealing the Moon' is an example of a QS design, this one took 3 months, again, stitching every day.

I love so many of their designs, I won't live long enough to do all the ones I want to stitch! :rotfl:

I also currently have 'Touched by Magic' underway, I had to put it aside to get my Christmas stitching done and I have 'Faery Tales' lined up for after that.

It also represents your ability to see things through -- the strength you have to persevere during difficult times -- and most importantly, the completion of something old, on the eve of beginning something new.

Lots of love to you, starshine.
May your needle stay threaded, your stitches even, and may the goddess keep your tangles far away. :)

I'm No36 in a cross stitch challenge I don't quite understand yet, but my goal is to be done all the stitches on my UFO before Christmastime!

Ellie, thank u for sharing your gorgeous Santa with us, he is stunning. Well done for having the courage to finish him, hopefully when u look at him he can remind u of hope, strength and new beginnings.

Well I managed a little stitching last night whilst watching CIN. Think I'm gonna get some basic housework done and then have a day stitching as OH is out all day :), now if only I could send these kids somewhere.............................................:rotfl:

I will get a pic up over lunchtime, nudge me if I forget!!
