Update time, i've been working on the lion he's almost complete :j Oh and with all those links you've been posting has made me fall in love with a kit called Beautiful Dreamer by Kustom Krafts. If i could find it for £10 i'd buy it :rotfl:

Hi Shelly (and anyone else who is interested) Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I've been at my sister's wedding. With my symphony frame I have found that if I try to use a piece of fabric that is a little too small for the frame it does slip a bit but I've found that if it is doing that I can sew a tube into the end of the fabric to hold the dowel in so that it doesn't slip. It removes some of the convenience of a clip in frame but does mean that you can use the frame with fabric that is really a bit small.

nmm - that wolf looks lovely but I'm sure that you can find one on e-bay or in a sale that is just as good and cheaper

Well I have started on The Astronomer! :j

Not very many stitches done yet, in a very dark navy (DMC 939). I am not sure about the coverage though, I can still see the antique white 28-count evenweave shining through. Should I do some more and see how it goes, or shall I try using three strands rather than than the two I am using. It may of-course look better once I have done a larger area. I don't want to do too much before deciding, as I don't fancy having to unpick lots of work!! :(

It is an H&E design, originally for 25 count, and recommends sewing in 2 strands of thread. Those of you who do H&E designs using 28 count (Louise and Mrs M and others!) and sewing over two threads, do you then use 3 rather than 2 strands??

Actually, now that I have stopped peering closely at the sewing, it looks better now when I look at it again. I think I will take the dog out for a walk before it gets dark (and any colder!!). Perhaps I will be happier with it when I come back!

Perhaps by then there will be an answer to my query.

Hi all -just taking a break..

:jKeiss -Im working on 28ct -over 2 threads and using 2 strands of floss -Sometimes close up I pondered about the coverage (only when using dark colours) -but when you get going it looks fine.
I read that a lot of those on 25ct over 1 thread are sewn in single strand -it would send me batty
If you look at this photo gallery of peoples work, scroll down the page there is a lady who has done a HAE called "the pink rose" and that is done in single strand and looks great

nmm -Im loving that wolf -I have done a pic of 2 wolves howling at the moon ages ago -I love them :D-those lions are coming along great too :T

Sweetcarer -you are romping through that alphabet, and its looking lovely :T
right -off for a loo break and then on with some more .... happy sewing everyone :D

Keiss - I have never used 3 strands, no matter what project or size of fabric.

Simple solution would be to have it mounted with a dark backing - put it against some dark fabric and let us know if you can still see the holes

If it's the fabric itself and not the holes - did the chart recommend using the white fabric??

Sweetcarer and nmm - those are looking brilliant :D

Wonderful pieces of work sweetcarer and nmn, can't wait to have a reasonable amount of work to show you all!

Thanks so much for your help
Louise and Mrs M, now I can back to it for another hour before I have my tea!

Coming back to the sewing after a break (walked the dog, took in the washing and filled the basket by the fire with logs), it doesn't look anywhere near so bad. In fact, from a distance of over 3 feet, you really don't notice the odd bit of material peeping through. H&E recommended white material, but I have gone for antique white, as I expect to use the surplus for numerous other projects.

Does anyone use a laying tool to make the threads lie better and look fuller? I did wonder about it, but it would certainly slow up the whole process!

I will post piccies at the beginning of the week, when I have a decent amount to show for all my efforts. Things are going a bit slowly at the moment as I am using a frame I have never used before (only hoops previously) and I still have to get used to the evenweave. I wear reading glasses already, but I can see myself getting some form of magnifyer...what do you use (if any)??

Thanks again, must get back to it.

See, you are noticing it less already.

I'm thinking it's because the fabric holes are freshly 'disturbed' that you have noticed it more. As the fabric moves and shifts, the threads will settle into place better.

'Laying tool'........never heard of one!!! Sounds like it would make it very time consuming tbh, and I very much doubt I would use it on a large project.

  • What storage system do you all use for your threads? I have the DMC stitchbows and plastic storage boxes but TBH I find them a bit uselss as the stitchbows are constantly falling out.

I've seen the stitchbow wallets and wonder if they are any better or can anyone reccomend a different system entirely?

    Hi ellie.

Hope you had a good day at your sisters wedding.

Thanks for the info. I think I might get a symphony frame next month with my birthday money now you say about stitching the fabric in place if it slips......I hadn't thought of that :o
Now I just have to figure out what size frame I want and hunt out a good deal :D

    Thanks again for your help

    Hi there Sunflower

I keep all my threads in a folder -in plastic wallets with pockets (used for card, medal collectors etc)
Here is a pic of what I mean...
    folderaq8.th.jpg
    threadfl1.th.jpg
it works great and I used a set of the adhesive numbers you get with the stitchbows-so they are in order ;)
The 2nd pic is how I have the threads that Im using for any particular kit -so each bag will have the number and symbol on -keeps them clean and they don't tangle like they do on those thread cards
    Hope that makes sense :p
