Because believe it or not, the empty boxes get stolen as well. Particularry on the popular titles like GTA or Hitman. And although the store still has the disc, the loss is the same as if the whole item was nicked as it is unsellable without the box.

So taking the disc out lessens the risk of theft, putting the empty case in a safer reduces the risk further. Pain in the !!!!!! for all concerned.

Yep, its certainly a pain for cashiers, especially when its only chart titles that are removed from the case, and many cashiers have no idea what is and isn't a chart title.

And going back to the cd issue, its not just Tesco, if a cd is sealed by the manufactuer then every supplier is sent sealed. If its not sealed, then no shop gets it sealed. Next time your in HMV take a look, most cds aren't sealed, they just have the security stickers over the spine. And do you really think that a huge chain like HMV would let its staff open and copy every single copy of every title they recieve.
    Titch :)

Unfortunately, due to the massive amounts of piracy and people buying CD's, copying them and then returning them (in no way am i implicating you in this process) most retailers no longer give refunds on CD's, DVD's or Software. As far as I am aware there is no way around this process.
Well I really got annoyed about this and e-mailed head office. They sent me back a lovely e-mail explaining that any product can be returned to Tesco as long as it is in it's original condition and with a valid receipt (if you want a refund) so I took a copy of the e-mail to tesco and got my refund - mind you I had just witnessed the CS girl giving a refund to a guy with a DVD so she didn't have a leg to stand on.
So it's a lesson here don't give up guys stand your ground!!

Most Tescos state this policy but also say they MAY restrict exchanges on DVD/CD/games to the same title. Doesn't say they will, just that they can use their discretion. Might be difficult to argue if you took every one back and asked for a refund 2 days after buying them, but if its only once in a while, then they should have a bit of distretion?

I do feel that this is a highly unsporting approach by your local store!!
Well it doesn't exactly seem right when you look at all the packs of chicken breasts, steak etc and they're all showing different prices per kg does it? Surely they have to be displaying a valid SEL?

Actually, no. Although it is a bit of an exageration to say that all the chicken breasts and steak are displaying a different price per kg.....

The products are all quite clearly priced, albeit with different prices per kg on different packets. There is no legal requirement to display an SEL, as long as there is a price for the product - which there is on the packet.

The downside for a store doing this is that there will be no yellow labels signifying which products are being promoted.

So surely when tescos are doing promotions for meats etc, they have to display the offers on the shelves? or don't all stores do the same offers at the same time?
When i said about different prices on the packs, when i was in there this morning, the HL chicken breast packs had 3 different prices per kg .... some packs said £6.49/kg, some said £8.49/kg and others said £9.81/kg...how can they do this?

That has got to be the first time someone has posted on mse that they WANT Tesco to abuse their buying power :rotfl:

The same policy applies to DVD's and games, its just the op had an issue with a CD.

Also worth pointing out that Tesco's policy is the same as pretty much every other high street retailer.

I don't think I would ever WANT anyone to abuse their power - buying or otherwise. I was merely pointing out that if Tesco say their non-return policy re cds, or dvds is due to the fact that they are un-sealed, therefore the customer could have copied the item before they return it, why don't they (Tesco) ensure the supplies they get are sealed.
Presumably all the Tesco branded goods are produced in the same factories that all the other supermarkets use. They end up with Tesco labels sewn in, Tesco packaging, Tesco bags. Why can they not ensure the cds, etc sent to Tesco are sealed. Doesn't seem like rocket science to me.
As I say, products I have received from cdwow and amazon etc have always been sealed. Plus I have never had a cd/dvd refund refused elsewhere, because they have their own security tags/devices - eg Smiths, Asda etc so they can clearly see the item has not been opened.:o

Actually the store does have a legal responsibility to provide accurate and unambiguous price indications, in displaying the price per kilo only on the pack they leave themselves open to prosecution as when more than one price is displayed they MUST sell at the lowest price to avoid falling foul of legislation. I've no doubt a big debate would ensue should someone push this at a cs desk but the law is on their side if they do. Reporting such practice to local Trading Standards would see an end to it, this practice is carried out locally to avoid r&r and in very many cases contrary to press and media advertisements.

so how would i go about reporting this to trading standards? just ring them up and say i believe this store should be displaying relevant SELs as a lot of the meat products have different prices per kg on them?

I am not sure that would be quite as simple as you suggest. Surely by individually pricing every pack they have fulfilled the unambiguous pricing concern, its only when they display a large SEL which doesnt match the price on the pack that we have a chance to R + R, so surely thats the same principle for them - if they dont have a SEL on display then you have to assume the pack price is correct (there is nothing to contradict it). They usually change prices as new stock comes in, so their argument could be that a particular batch with a sell by date off eg 13th July is priced at 8.99/kg for example, but the newer stock with a sell by date of 17th July is now priced at 9.99/kg as its a different batch. We couldnt claim R and R if they didnt leave the SEL of 8.99/kg visible, and by the same logic they cant be accused of ambiguous pricing if they only have the label on the item and nothing elsewhere to confuse the issue.

I know I certainly wouldnt like to attempt that argument at the CS desk, and I am not sure Trading Standards would be able to take anyone to task for that either, I dont think there is a legal requirement to have a SEL, only a price must be displayed that is clear - pricing individual packs covers that.

Oh and you Tesco lot reading here, dont take that back to work on Monday as a brilliant idea to stop R and R's <g>, I like the bright yellow SELs as they usually identify a bargain ;-)
