  • No SELs or labels on Bananas (is it an offence not to price goods?)

Yes it is. Action available to be taken by your local Trading Standards office under the Price Marking Order, and the Consumer Protection Act. Find your local office below.

    bingo bango.. thanks for this.
Definately ringing HO at lunch today so will give them a chance to respond to this too.
Really think my local store needs to get it's act together!!

Has anyone been to Tesco today and seen the oranges offer? Do these punnets of satsumas really exist?

MoneySavingMonkey - I have similar arguments with my local Tescos because they had misleading signs up. I didn't get my R&R but I was more aggreived at the blatantly misleading signs they had up all over the place. I reported them to Trading Standards who went and investigated and told them they were wrong. They took the signs down (although they do keep one in a little book under the CS desk and have pointed this out to me on subsequent occasions!!)

The sign in question related to the price per kg on the shelf only being an "indication" of the price (hence in this store you will hardly ever succeed with mispriced meat, fish, cheese etc that is variable weight even though Trading Standards have told them, and me, that this is wrong)

I picked these up today and got told that if I wanted the chicken breasts at 6.49kg I had to pick a pack with the sticker on, regardless of the fact that the shelf was full of packs without stickers for £8.12kg. I said I wanted the most newest stock on the shelf for which I was entitled to and the fact there was not a price displayed for the stock at £8.12, but she was having none of it and said to go and pick another stickered pack. I said "no thanks give me a refund and I'll go to Iceland where I know how much I am paying for my items" (in a very pointed way so she got the message) and she had to RnR me on some mince and bananas. Was she right about not doing the RnR for the breasts?

Nope she was definitely wrong. From reading your post I understand that the breasts you bought were priced based on a weight per kg of £8.12, but the SEL said this product was £6.49 per kg.

I posted a few days ago about getting R&R on these same items from a very stroppy CS. She knew she couldn't wriggle out of it and she knows I know the policy.

If you have problems, always refer the CS person to the blue sign behind her, it says something like 'if you are charged more than is shown on the product OR the shelf...' - which you were. There is nothing to say that you have to pay the price on your pack, if the SEL is lower it applies to all such product on that shelf.

Assuming your CS lady did not remove the SEL, I would go at a different time of day and buy some more, taking your old receipt with you too. Then when you get overcharged a second time go to CS again and try with a different CS (don't mention the previous scenario yet).

If you get a good CS who will do the R&R this time, then say, well I'm glad you agree, as last time I bought these (earlier this week) I was told I was wrong (produce older receipt). As you clearly know what you are doing could you possibly refund me for both purchases and make sure the SEL is amended?

I did this once on Coca-Cola which was meant to be 2 for £2.20.........and the second CS person was nice as pie and R&R'd both, and removed the SEL.

Phoned CS this lunchtime about my oranges saga + pointed out that some goods in the store are not priced. Just phrased conversation as, I'd like to make a few comments & suggestions... could you do something about your misleading signage. Also pointed out that CS lady helping me at the time was extremely pleasant, helpful & patient although ultimately she was not able to give me a satisfactory result.

Took my name and address & said they would look into and notify store about pricing and speak to HO about signage... watch this space!

    QUOTE bluekp:

Turkey Mince SEL £1.20 pack labelled and scanned at £1.31 - full R & R no problems QUOTE

I was about to post this as I found it by chance in a large Sussex Tesco today, now see it's already been posted!

What a laugh though!! I spotted this clear misprice (but didn't think I could fit anything else in the freezer), decided to leave it. Then I saw a Tesco lady-with-trolley/pricer next to them, decided to be nice and point it out to her, see what she would say!

She said, 'oh, don't worry, it will scan at £1.20'. 'Will it definitely?' I replied. 'Yes it will, if not, it's illegal and you can kick somebody...............!!'

Talk about rag to a bull, it was worth picking it up just for the challenge! She made no attempt to check it, remove the SEL or anything, no wonder there is so much mispriced meat & poultry around all the time at Mr T's....

End result, scanned at £1.31, full R&R, lovely CS lady who looked shocked when I told her what her colleague had told me! Suspect she then went off to kick her learned friend.......:D

    Quick question.
It appears that when dealing with the CS staff on a regular basis, us R&Rers move through different levels when encountering the resistive CS people, the R&R can be won at any stage.

Stage One. Bright smile point out error await R&R.

Stage Two. Maybe a differance refund is offered so we step up to pointing out R&R policy sign.

Stage Three. SEL inspection and debate. CS call in renforcements with the title "manager". They suggest that there are all sorts of reasons that the orange offer only applies to square oranges or the chicken offer on the SEL is left handed chickens not right handed....

This seems to be the level at which most people fail the R&R and walk away.

    It seems that this is also the point at which CS will not "give in" to R&R, this is the barrier that needs to be broken through. The CS stand their ground at all costs mode. (I'll come back to costs.) As with any obstacle the right tool needs to be used to move it;

    What is that tool?
This is where I would like to hear other peoples "tools" for breaking the CS defence. The most often mentioned here I would suggest is the phonecall or letter to head office, myself I prefer a letter, it seems to work as I have a stack of £5 & £10 vouchers.

As so much of the R&R battle (too strong a word?) is based on the displayed SEL and packet price I feel that photographing SELs as you shop is the only way to prove the vendor's offered price at the time you shopped, we have read much of the sneeky disappearing SELs. With mobile phone cameras it is not unreasonable to just happen to have it with you, and as for taking a picture while you shop - if asked just say it was such a good deal you wanted to tell/SMS the image to a friend. (...or use it in the letter to head office.)

I have not tried it, but I would think that when at Stage Three and CS & Co. have presented their case with the impication that you should now leave the store as you have lost you should mention the photographic evidence. The fact you have some proof of the SEL at the time might have an affect on their understanding of R&R policy and willingness to be customer focused.

Is this Stage Four? Mention the Customer Protection Act and Pricing laws, local Trading Standards? How has CS and "Manager" reacted to that? Any experiances?

I suggest a Stage Five, although thinking about the probable situation this will not result in R&R there and then but letter writting. Quote the name of the local Trading Standards Officer, TSO. A piece of information that is easily availible and an indication that you are a serious contender on the R&R game.

Is it easier for CS to give you the R&R or have another marker in TSO's little black book? And another internal Tesco letter from head office about bad customer service experiance or having to report an R&R misprice.

Looking at the Tesco stores manager's point of view their least "hit" will be for you to walk away, if they can make you do that with a little verbal hassle then they have won the battle at zero cost.

To give the R&R will cost them a little, they are not bothered about the few pounds or even a mobile phone, the hassle is from head office for not pricing correctly, that is a small cost.

The big cost, I suggest, is dealing with a build up of TSO investigations and bad customer experiance letters on file at head office. The other cost I play is their time, the best time to complain for a quick solution is Saturday morning - they are already busy and it costs a lot to spend time talking to someone prepared to hold their ground - also does not look good in front of other customers.

So when you are at Stage Three and they are showing you the door, consider asking them how much hassle they want.

    Thoughts ?

Too much to answer right now slug but I will have a bash tomorrow, a thought for you to ponder though is that few will follow through to T/S that is where the battle lies to convince enough to make the complaint.

Big long post there Slugpizza with some interesting points. Just to pick up on one - I would not recommend taking photographs without express permission. In common with any other retailer, Tesco stores are private property.

Thanked 1 Time in 1 Post Extra Club Card points - Bring your own bags to the store

Tesco has just introduced a new scheme where if you bring your own shopping bags, you receive an extra Club Card point per bag. We always bring our own bags, and since the scheme was introduced we did our shop last week, using 4 of our own bags, and got 4 extra points! Every bit helps . . .

Ask in store if you are not offered the points for using your own bags - they should honour this.
