Overtaking

Again, the same thing. I can keep a safe distance in front of me and still commit to overtaking when the road conditions permit. You don't HAVE to drive right on peoples bumpers to be able to overtake.Similarly, it should not be considered normal to drive on peoples bumpers as a sign to those behind that I WANT to overtake at the next opportunity.
What you guys are describing is EXACTLY what causes rear end shunts!! One car brakes and the rest of you have not got time to react as you are all inches from each other!!
(for the scot), I've described a queue of traffic in front, with nothing more than a safe distance between me and the car in front, with some idiot trying to fill it.
Everyone else in the queue has the same opportunities to do it - those near the front could get past the obstruction if they wanted to.
If you don't like someone overtaking and pulling in front then you should take the opportunity to overtake the thing in front of you.
When did I say anything about driving on a bumper?
The "idiot" filling the space in front of you is working their way along the queue because you're not prepared to do so.Happy chappy0 -

As you age, your ability to judge speed and distance decreases, at least according to the Police instructor who took me out a few weeks back. It means they are more likely to carry out dangerous moves, or get annoyed when people carry out safe moves that they precieve, incorrectly, as dangerous.0 -

You make some daft assumptions.
If there is an overtaking opportunity in front of me, I would be taking it.
Just because I leave a safe distance in front of me, why oh why do you think I am happy to sit at 40mph in a 60mph zone??
Same for all the others, why do you assume they are not taking their overtaking opportunities and everyone is happy driving slowly??
Everyone should get out of your way when coming from 20 cars back because you are the only car who doesn't want to be stuck behind the obstruction.
There are two examples of you say it's okay to drive on bumpers....- having a safe gap is a sign for you to overtake from behind (so you MUST be driving on my rear bumper as a sign to the guy behind you that you are going to overtake)
- In front of me is a safe distance, and you are going to overtake me to get into it. Therefore you will be carving in directly in front of my front bumper

Just because it's Christmas and I am feeling charitable.... is it possible that any of the drivers described - where trying to do you a favour? - for instance:
a) They know there is black ice on that particular road at the moment, you can't see it, and you would rather hit it at 40 than 60
b) They know there are speed cameras/traps ahead....
I have on occasion pulled into the outside lane of a dual carridgeway near me when I see someone doing 90 to slow them down at a particular stretch where I know there is a hidden speed trap around the next corner. Usually do get the v sign or whatever from them as they obliviously pass through the camera trap at the slower speed....
It could be the drivers described are just knobs of course, but it's Christmas - let's think the best of people!0 -
It is entirely possible to drive both quickly AND safely.
I've lost count of the amount of times I have been stuck in traffic to have lunatics coming from miles back on the opposite side of the road with absolutely NO IDEA where they are going to slot back in.
It's only when something appears coming toward them that they decide to force their way into a gap which simply doesn't exist.
Half a mile down the road a Dual Carriageway appears and I pull out into the right hand lane and overtake the freaking lot of them, speeding, maybe, but ultimately safely.
Some of these posters don't come across as boy racer chav types, but what is being described in this thread is exactly that.
Aggressive, arrogant, intolerant driving is one of the very worse types on our roads.0 -

It's just so weird the range of reactions - a rough index of severity.
1) Slow down, indicate left, help people pass - that's me (although it's quite rare)
2) Carry on as normal
3) Drive 3ft from the car infront so overtaking's impossible
4) Flash lights, shake fist, sound horn (no idea what that's about)
5) Tailgate for a few miles
6) Speed up ONLY while they're trying to overtake
7) Swerve around the road to stop them overtaking
If I was cynical, I'd say that this index is inversely proportional to penis size
did you blind him with your front fogs on (and it was not foggy) when behind him???
cant underdstand the drivers who like using front fogs when its not even foggy....but sometimes in return i switch on my rear fog lamp to dazzle them back!0 -

Ohh !!!!!! !!!
You simply have not understood ANY of the scenario I have described.
Maybe I should wear a baseball cap and drive on peoples bumpers too, seems to be the standard of driving which is now acceptable.
The attitude of "everyone else on the road is a slow old jacka$$" seems to be the general consensus.0 -
You have simply not described the situation in a manner that makes sense.
You've moaned on about people overtaking you and pushing in, then said that you would have been overtaking if you could have done so. So why are things behind you overtaking whilst you're not?
Are you still working on the principle that you won't overtake anything unless you can overtake everything in one go?Happy chappy0
