I want to overtake aswell, if you think you can overtake everyone infront of me (like I described I did in a previous post of mine here) you are welcome to try but don't think I will yield to bully boy tactics because I won't and we'll see how the insurance companies work out how you came to scrape the left hand side of your car against the right hand side of mine.

BTW the volvo driver in the OP had a clear road infront of him NOT a line of traffic.

Sorry if I did not make this clear in my first post, but I assumed saying the Volvo driver sped up to 60mph from 40mph indicated that there was nobody closely in front of him, and also I'm a she not a he!! ;)

  • I did some naughty overtaking today. Stupid car park at retail out of town shopping mall......you have to go up and down the one way streets, burning up unneccessary petrol and wasting fuel. It was early in the morning and hardly any cars parked up, a VW golf was driving this stupid route, but I drove from a fair distance away right through the car park, weaving inbetween the empty car spaces to get to the exit. I cut in front of the golf, and felt triumphant, all I saw was a flashed headlight and her shaking her head, however none of my actions broke the law as it is not a public road. I wish the people who dont have the brains to get ahead in life stop holding the winners up - we do have places to go - time is money to us.

As long as you drove responsibly with due caution because pedestrians are to be expected in a car park, and you didn't cause the golf to brake then fine no problem. But don't think that because it is not highway that you have no responsibility to drive carefully.

Tried to overtake a BMW today, and only once i'd pulled out and put my foot down did he decide to show me that 84 HP wasn't enough to get past.

Come up behind a Volvo Taxi, the BMW pulls out to overtake (on a straight single carriageway with no turn offs) with about a 15 MPH speed differential, just as he's about to pass the Volvo indicates left and pulls into the middle of the road causing the BMW driver to slam the brakes on. !!!!!!!

No, I still don't think you get it, Apple cannot overtake because there is nowhere to overtake into, so she has to sit it out until the guys at the front have either overtaken or dropped back and created a suitable space to pull into.
    Yes, that's what I described.
Queue of traffic bunched up, them behind it with a space in front of them.
They're not prepared to overtake because they'd have to push into a slot ahead of them.
"how can you tell that such a person wants to overtake?"
You have no need to tell, you will see ahead of them that it is impossible for them to overtake even if they wanted to.
However, you have no way of telling that they would overtake when the opportunity does present itself.

    However,if they didn't

    Scenario 1:
Perhaps he was thinking the same thing as you, and because he had the power he just floored it and decided to overtake aswell - Assuming there was a car infront of the BMW.

    Scenario 2:
If there was no car infront of the BMW, perhaps he just decided to wake up at that point and come out of his daydream, decided he actually could do with a burst of speed right now and left you behind him.... I know scenario 2 is the same as the OP, and yes it can be frustrating for the overtaker, but there may be no malice involved as long as the BMW kept going at that increased speed there should be no problem for the overtaker, who retakes their position behind the BMW, if the BMW subsequently slowed down again that would be out of order.

So what happened next? That does sound like strange behaviour.

Have this all the time - some people have a huge problem with people overtaking them - I've even had some move over onto the other side of the road in an attempt to try and run me off the road.

It's just so weird the range of reactions - a rough index of severity.

    1) Slow down, indicate left, help people pass - that's me (although it's quite rare)
    2) Carry on as normal
    3) Drive 3ft from the car infront so overtaking's impossible
    4) Flash lights, shake fist, sound horn (no idea what that's about)
    5) Tailgate for a few miles
    6) Speed up ONLY while they're trying to overtake
    7) Swerve around the road to stop them overtaking

If I was cynical, I'd say that this index is inversely proportional to penis size :)

and yet option 1 isn't the correct thing to do either. Unless you're turning off, you should never put on your left indicator - it is to signal an intention to begin a left hand turn, not to indicate a willingness to be overtaken

Number 2 is the correct option.
