I nearly had an accident thanks to someone doing this to me - the other car clearly had a much bigger engine than my paltry little 1.5 so when they dropped a gear I had no chance.

I think your needing to have another read of the highway code or something. (more lessons perhaps?)

Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.

Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow-moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass.

    Remember, y'all.

The Highway Code is just recommendations and not legally enforceable.

It is more of a cult publication, best selling book after the bible.

Its a bit of a scam, just like paying a fee to join the institute of 'advanced' motorists nerds. :D
  • Not placing any legal precedent on the highway code, but as there is a theory test these days and most answers are probably found in the highway code, you need a knowledge of it.
I think the parts of the highway code I quoted are how a good curteous driver would drive. No more, no less.
What I find though, someone who leaves a sensible gap then speeds up to close it due to me overtaking, will yield before I make contact with them. (just move left until they do, because they will).

Yeah, it says "please let buses pull out when indicating" But the bus drivers seem to think an indicator is a god given right.

There could be two sides to this story.

I've been driving on a NS road with nothing more than a safe distance between me and the car in front. If that means we are tootling along at 40mph, so be it. If there is no free road in front, then keep a safe distance and match the speed of the car in front.

There is no point overtaking if there is nowhere to go.

I find it amazing how many people see the safe distance in front of me as their space. If you allow them to overtake, then I have to slow down to regain a safe distance, only for the next car to want to get in it and so on and so on.

Maybe we should all drive bumper to bumper at any speed.
You're not taking any opportunities to overtake the things in front of you. So those behind you assume that you're happy at 40mph or whatever so have to knock you off before they can get to work on the obstruction.

    .

I take it the part about leaving safe distances doesn't apply to you then??

You seriously believe you can go round carving people up and driving on peoples bumpers because Section 168 of the highway code says everyone has to get out of your way??

You are another one who can't read the posts, more reading lessons perhaps?

I've never described an open road in front of me holding those up behind (see if you can get someone to help you read my replies in this thread).

Again, the same thing. I can keep a safe distance in front of me and still commit to overtaking when the road conditions permit. You don't HAVE to drive right on peoples bumpers to be able to overtake.Similarly, it should not be considered normal to drive on peoples bumpers as a sign to those behind that I WANT to overtake at the next opportunity.

What you guys are describing is EXACTLY what causes rear end shunts!! One car brakes and the rest of you have not got time to react as you are all inches from each other!!

(for the scot), I've described a queue of traffic in front, with nothing more than a safe distance between me and the car in front, with some idiot trying to fill it.

OP driving a RX8 you could have gone past most things,a rotary engine is a wonderful thing!

On the subject of buses, why have they done away with lay-by's at bus stops ?

When a bus stops around my area now the whole line of traffic stops behind it. This then happens every half a mile or so until the bus reaches the main station causing longer traffic jams and incresed journey times, what idiot come up with this idea?

    Merry Christmas Everyone,

For the scot? What has that to do with anything?

I digress. Your queue is people in front I want to get past. Whether its 1 car or 100, if I want to go faster than you all, I will. So I overtake. Your speeding up to prevent this. THATS how people end up getting rear ended. I go past you AND the car in front of you, they brake, your accelerating, bang, YOU'VE rear ended someone.

also they risk causing you to have a full impact head on collission. Pretty immature way of proving a point, as they risk the lives of the other people headed in the other direction too.

just do the right thing, slow down and pull slightly into the left, indicate if need be.
