Overtaking

Anybody else had this experience before?

I had a scary experience this morning when overtaking. I was stuck behind a car doing 35mph on a National Speed Limit road so I waited for a clear view ahead, stuck my indicator on and stared to overtake. At this moment, old guy in Volvo decides to speed up very quickly as if to race me! I had no choice but to break and slot back in behind him, then he slowed back down to 40mph!! Why do people do this, it seems incredibly dangerous. Fair enough if he's happy to tootle along at 40mph why stop me from overtaking? Made me so cross!! Sorry had to vent!!

Because he's a selfish git. Karma will get the better of him.

Have this all the time - some people have a huge problem with people overtaking them - I've even had some move over onto the other side of the road in an attempt to try and run me off the road.

It's just so weird the range of reactions - a rough index of severity.

    1) Slow down, indicate left, help people pass - that's me (although it's quite rare)
    2) Carry on as normal
    3) Drive 3ft from the car infront so overtaking's impossible
    4) Flash lights, shake fist, sound horn (no idea what that's about)
    5) Tailgate for a few miles
    6) Speed up ONLY while they're trying to overtake
    7) Swerve around the road to stop them overtaking

If I was cynical, I'd say that this index is inversely proportional to penis size :)
  • This is very dangerous and immaturity displayed by the Volvo driver. I constantly overtake and make sure I have built enough revs that I am certain that I will comfortably get past even if they do speed up. You did the best thing in that situation though, also good idea to give big distance from them, it visibly shows them what you think of a dangerous idiot they are. Eventually they will take a turn somewhere - its not worth risking road rage over.

I get this all the time, I think it is jealousy that you have got in front of them and are making progress.

In my younger - equally immature, driving days - and with low cost old banger cars, whenever I had someone tailgating they soon learned who would be losing the insurance payout when I slammed the brakes in their face.

Then you can annoy them by slowing down to slightly slower than the speed they were originally doing:D

Totally agree, I know some people would have gotten right up his bum after what he did, but I'm not that sort of driver. I did manage to overtake later on and i felt his eyes bore into me as I went past, I didn't look at him though, wasn't going to give him the satisfaction to know he had bothered me!

Ahh, that's where you went wrong, right there ;)

Seriously though, in my opinion the only safe way to overtake is to build up speed first, give the other car a wide berth, and don't indicate. That way you'll be half way past before they even notice they're being overtaken.

Thats why my car has twin turbos, once I a on boost, an old bloke in a volvo would have no chance.

The Volvo driver sounds like a bone head.
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)

It was a new Volvo!! And in my defence I was driving OH's car so was unsure what to do as I'm not that familar with it! Whe I told my partner he said if i put my foot down it would have been fine (its a Mazda with the funny back doors!!) Being heavily pregnant and quite bad conditions on the road I decided it wasn't worth the risk though!!
