    Hi Nicki,
Have your doctors prescribed anything for the reflux? Liam suffers too. At first it was just the constant vomiting (usually projectile and feeding required a towel to catch it) I think MM's doctors described this a silent reflux and there doesn't seem to be any associated pain. We were initially treating the reflux by using a thickening formula (sorry don't know if you FF or BF) but Liams reflux symptoms seemed to have increased in the weeks over christmas and we are now on infant gaviscon.

It’s recommended to try and keep reflux babies sat up for about 20mins after each feed, to stop the acid rising back up. Raising the head end of the cot/moses basket can also help. On bad days, Liam settles better sleeping on his side
I know there is more advise, but I can think of it just yet. I am sure someone else will be along soon to help.

    SS – ouch!

He started off on gaviscon which didn't help much if at all, then moved onto ranitidine which made things worse not better. He's now on Domperidone which makes food move the system very quickly and suppresses the vomit reflex and Losec which cuts down the production of stomach acid. He's only been on the last two for a week and he seems a bit happier, but still upchucks for England, and his weight gain is still very low.

He doesn't let me put him down much during the day so usually spends most of the day upright, but crying. He doesn't sleep at all during the day, but sleeps well at night bizarrely, without needing the cot head to be raised. I will try putting him on his side in the daytime and see if he will settle that way. Thanks for the tip.

Ah, I think Bruno and money maker will be able to offer more advise than me, IIRC they both have had dealing with the above meds.

    Hi everyone, I'm back :)

Hi Nicki, long time no speak ;)
Dylan has silent reflux as NMS said as he just chucks up with no crying or pain, but it is the same as 'normal' reflux in that its acid build up. I was told at the start to feed them with their head elevated more than the rest of the body, and keep them upright for at least 20 - 30 mins afterwards. Try to wind before half way through and after the feed. Also raise ther cot or moses basket at the head end by putting books under the legs or a folded blanket under the mattress to lift the head up.
IIRC you are BF so there isnt much I can help in that sence as for FF babies, 1st choice is to use a thincker milk. I think if you ask the docs or HV they should be able to give you baby gaviscon to start with and see how that goes. With any luck, like a lot of the babies here, that has worked, or in mine, brunos and a few others we are now on our 2nd or 3rd medicine as the gaviscon didnt work.

Good luck though, its hard work, but most grow out of it before they are 9 months :)

ETA - just saw your last post, we never had domperidon we went gaviscon, ranitidine and are now on omeprazole wich AFAIK is the same as Bruno is wilt E
They say to allow 4 - 6 weeks minimum before you will see a noticible result though

MM, I've done it. I've converted the tescos vouchers into airmiles!!!
Too many children, too little time!!!
    :p
  • Yay for Kai's spoon using. That is very impressive, Mel! My nephew is the same age and nowhere near using a spoon!

I'm watching the programme about the 17 kids- makes me feel so much better about my one.

Thanks mm. I'm still breastfeeding, though with one ff at night, and the gaviscon was a biatch to get into him. I think his bf position does have his head slightly elevated, though its hard to know for sure. I will try the winding idea. I hope that he does grow out of it. I only know two people IRL whose kids have this - one is 6 and the other is 10, and both still suffer badly!

The paediatrician has suggested that the next stage is for a gastro referral and probably a camera down into his tummy to see if all is ok down there. Has this been suggested to you?

If Molly won't take a bottle, I'd nab her cold flannel for your nips if I were you. Or if you're feeling forgiving put another one in for yourself. :D. Or you could use the quark again. I didn't want to mention that first time round as we fell out over it on the pregnancy thread and I didn't want you to think I was making a dig (apologies for the bad feeling then, it was a bad time for me and you were caught in the cross fire) but I remember you said it was very effective and worked very quickly.

No worries - pregnancy was a hormonal time for all of us.

The quark is for redness and not the bitten sort of soreness, but if it still hurts tomorrow I might brave cling film in my bra again and try it. Germans are mad for their herbal remedies, after the C-section they refused to let me see Molly until I'd drunk a cup of relaxing chamomile tea  Relaxing would have been meeting my baby properly and not drinking from a dirty cup with sticks floating in it.

The quark really did help though, as did the chilled cabbage leaves for the few days when my milk first came in (pregnant lurkers take note :rotfl:)

Ouch for a camera down the gastro tube. Poor Edward.

I have a feeling that omeprazole is the same thing as Losec which Edward is on along with the domperidone. I'm due to see the paed in 4 weeks time so perhaps you are right that it takes a long time to see a difference, and I shouldn't lose heart just yet.
  • Mel - yay for self-spooning babies!

Benjamin can do anything which is quite firm (mash, porridge, baby pasta & veg etc) but anything sloppy causes a huge mess! We taught him to turn the spoon over once it is in his mouth to get it all off which is great with mash etc but he ends up pouring runny things back out of his mouth :rotfl::rotfl:

I keep meaning to ask about raisins. Is there a reason why babies shouldn't have them? I let Benjamin have them, since he could pick them up individually, but I keep thinking that I am doing wrong according to 'them'.

Also - is the honey ban til 1 or later? This is the only one that I kind of take any notice of because of the botulism thing.
