Bleed, then scan showed empty preg sac

Rosie, I have two different viewpoints for you.
First, I used to work as an administrator in the ultrasound department of a hospital. For early pregnancy, or to look at the uterus of a woman who wasn't pregnant, we'd suggest 1-1.5l of water before the scan because the abdominal scan isn't optimal without the full bladder and TV is very invasive. For women carrying extra weight on their middles, TV scanning was often required anyway - I've no idea why they wouldn't just do that if you'd just produced a urine sample and hadn't had time to fill your bladder (20 minutes from mouth to bladder, so you'd need to have finished your drinking 20 minutes before the scan).
Second, I had bleeding early in my pregnancy and was sent home to rest and see what happened. The early scan showed a blob in situ, but nothing more, and the scan a week later involved a heartbeat. The blob in question is now mercifully asleep, since she is teething and hates being awake because it hurts.
I hope it goes well for you, and I'm so sorry your EPU have been rubbish.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

Rosie, I wanted to add that my EPU are also rubbish. When I was miscarrying they refused to fit me in for a scan the day it began as it was a Friday. I lost the baby over the weekend, and had the scan on Monday, where I was told 'we can;t see a baby, we don't know you were even pregnant' and subjected me to two weeks of blood tests, including one that was lost, to prove that I had been pregnant and that I had lost a baby. It was only at the end of hte two weeks that anyone said to me 'yes, you have miscarried and we are sorry' by which time it was too late.
It's a time when you need compassion and caring and don't get it, so I really do feel for you and if it were me again I'd have a private scan as I found waiting three days was horrendous, so two weeks would be hell.
I know there is nothing they can do if you are losing the baby that early, but you'd think they'd want to set your mind at rest and help you cope with whatever is happening.
However, when I bled with my next pregnancy (three times) I went to the labour ward and they were lovely to me, and the result of that pregnancy is at long last asleep upstairs.
I really, really hope you are feeling as OK as you can, and that everything is OK. :A:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

Girls. Thank you all so much for your kindness and sticky bean vibes coming my way. I'm afraid I was on Google yesterday again. I have this horrible fascination to find out as much as I can, but I know I am only torturing myself. So no Google today.... promise! My big sis got me a subscription to Gardeners' World mag as a pressie, so I will hibernate with that today. Too snowy and slippy outside to be venturing out.
I have been mentally running through my first scan, and wish I had a good memory. What I do remember, is that when the doc told me she could see a heartbeat I said to her, ' so I am definitely, definitely still pregnant and the baby is alive?' And she said, 'yes, definitely.' With a big smile on her face. I just wish I could remember what the picture on the screen was like, but I just can't. If she saw an embryo with a heartbeat one day, then there couldn't be no embryo next day could there? Even if it didn't have a heartbeat, the embryo would have been there.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

Big sticky bean vibes from me too xx
I had slightly different issues with scan with my LO. He was 23 weeks and they could get a great scan of him bar his heart. It was beating but not all the chambers could be seen. We had 4 scans at our local hospital over 2 weeks and no one could see his heart fully. Sent me home with my notes and Google is not your friend!! It looked like they thought he had half his heart missing and i was sent to the area specialist for a scan. By then i was at my wits end and soooo stressed. The specialist scanned me for 20 mins and got clear pics of his heart easily- nothing the matter at all!! All that stress for nothing.
I know its not the same for you but please keep in mind that not everyone who does scans is good at interpreting the results if they are unclear. 6 people in the end scanned me before one of them got a good result. Please keep safe and rested and try not to stress too much about it all. The next scan will be more definative as more time has passed. Hugs hun x0 -
Hi Ladies just a quick question from the ectopic i experienced not last september but the september before Is the op to far gone for the HCG blood tests to tell them anything i was only about 4 weeks gone when i suffered my problems but the did a blood test and asked me to go back 48hrs later for another if the hormone levels had doubled then the pregnancy was still viable. Maybe it would be worth asking the question the blood tests may be able to clarify what is going on if the pregnancy is not viable the levels should stay the same or go down but not sure if it work with how far gone you are :-)
Fingers crossed all is ok and loads of sticky bean vibes coming your way xx:jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j0 -
Glad it all worked out in the end for you redcedar. What stress though!!!!
Xmaslolly: I am now 8 weeks (tomorrow) and haven't had any bloods done yet. I think they don't routinely do bloods until about 10 weeks when the midwife booking in appt is done. I'm tempted to phone the EPU and ask for another scan. The time is just dragging. Normally 2 weeks seems to go quickly, but it has only been 5 days and feels like a lifetime. I suppose the worst they can say is 'no'. I'm just not a very assertive person.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

Ok. Take a deep breath, walk away from the computer and do it now (said in my best stern but caring voice). If they do say "no" you will be no worse off than you are now and perhaps it will make you a little less antsy to have got an answer.
Sending you huge positive vibes.0 -

Call them.
If it was me, I'd call them or go up there and wait. To be left holding out over Christmas and new year for the sake of a 10 minute scan is really hard."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Hi Rosie
HCG tests are not routine blood tests they are only normally carried out if there is a problem Hcg is the hormone that pregnancy tests pick up and the levels should double every 24/48 hrs. I have googled it so you dont have to and it does appear they can be carried out at 8wks prgnant to determine if levels are increasing or staying stagnent. A blood test today and again in 48hrs has got to be better than waiting 2wks for a scan. Test result can normally be passed to the doctor within a few hrs give them a call you have nothing to loose, they will either say yes or no:jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j0
