I've read this thread from start to finish with interest and like many others, I have to put my 2pence worth in!

Aliasojo, you've done the right thing. My parents DID used to check presents from other people and if they weren't suitable then we didn't get them. No fuss, no stress, we just listened to my parents because we respected them. I love them all the more for bothering to vet everything we got.

My folks used to watch every video and read every book we were given to make sure there was nothing upsetting, nothing that would lead us astray or nothing that would give us nightmares.

This girl is 10, not 30. Her mum is watching out for her as every mum should. There are way too many feral kids out there and I can put money on Aliasojo's girl not being one of them!!

Jamespir, you are a truly horrible person, and I'm truly glad you're not my dad!! There was absolutely no reason for your nastiness or your sarcasm. If you didn't want to say something constructive then why did you bother?? Shame on you for making Alias's actions and decision seem like a bad one by being cruel. I'm sure you could have got your point across without being so rude.

I'm not a parent, but Alias's experience is one reason why I don't want kids. Nothing a parent does is right as far as a child is concerned, but in time they learn that Mum usually does know best and Alias, I'm sure your girl will look at you in years to come and realise you were only doing what you thought was right. I'm pleased that your daughter is going to grow up responsible and mature, and you'll know in your heart it's you and your parenting skills that's made her that way.

Merry Christmas to you all, except James as he really doesn't seem to have any Xmas spirit in him! Bah Humbug to you, you meanie!!

Damn damn damn I sooooooo wish I had written this post!:rotfl:
Just read it from start to end, and I completely agree with everything in this post, sums it all up.
OP you are not alone, I have a 6yr old dd, and have opened presents in the past, and would do it again if I felt the need.
We are the parents, not the buddies, not the classmates, not the distant relatives. PARENTS. Everyone has different opinions as to what this means, but I 100% agree with OP.:T
Shocked by some opinions to be honest. joys of the internet forum!:rotfl:

but you cant hide those things from her because they can learn it elsewhere evan at 10

I'm not sure you meant that in the way I read it, because I immediately thought 'I'm very happy to hide my children from things they might see elsewhere'. That's part of my job. Swearing, drunkenness, violence, tattoos, smoking, mobile phones, pierced ears, FCUK or similar branded clothing are all normal things they might see or hear outside our house, but not inside it.

Which brings me nicely on to the few comments on this thread about FCUK and Playboy branded items; I'm staggered that these might be bought for children as young as 10. The thong suggestion I'd be much more relaxed about (in comparison!) Thankfully I'm far more at risk of Bench and Abercrombie; very expensive but I now appreciate fairly harmless. :D

Thankfully my children have more interest in flat black pumps or trainers, than heels of any kind.

We're all just trying our best to do what we think is right at the end of the day, aren't we?

at the end of the day its s slogon for a company i knew what playboys were at ten i didnt know the f word becasue it hadnt been invented yet and it hasnt scarred me
i do agree that these sill wheelie trainers are silly and i wouldnt let my child have them

i would never buy a thong for a ten year old though (to me that something older girls/women wear for thier boyfreinds/partners )

    Oh yes, we do.

(Wondering about the conspiracy theory regarding parents not telling others how hard this parenting malarky actually is, if done with any thought whatsoever!:D)

It's a doddle when they are sleeping ;) Although a parents work is never done, when they are asleep you can at least get on with things
