  • Also got to the bottom of the manufacturer of the unit- still don't know who it is. But basically its a box of bits from other manufacturers. So thankfully the parts are all readily available as the manufacturers of the individual parts are still in business.

Well it could be the compressor or the condenser both contain refrigerant, the compressor pumps refrigerant round the condenser!!!

I really don't want to get into debate that appears to be 'knocking' ASHPs, but as in many situations, they are not 'all things to all men'. They have their strong points and weak points, as do the air to air and air to water variants.

I had no idea that air to water ASHP's could be used for home heating, I saw an apartment I really liked, found out that there was no gas or chance of gas & initially passed it by. After a few more months of looking, I still liked the "electric" apartment best, by a big margin; so started to see how it could be heated (storage heating not acceptable to me in any way, shape or form) it was from this forum, I found air to water ASHP's had evolved (had one as pool heater overseas once) & have learned the pro's & con's of them.
Yes, they are not everything, and if you have gas - go gas. If all you have is electricity, and you rule out storage heating (personal choice) then despite the costs involved they are the best you can do. People on the forum have convinced me to combine the ASHP with underfloor heating, to get best performance, again not the cheapest on a retrofit.
But like a lot of us, I want to live where I like it & am prepared to pay for my comfort, so to leave it on 24/7 is OK by me, just turn it down a bit while not there. Thanks to all. T

The downside to underfloor heating is you dont get cooling in summer.

With an air to air system you get both cooling and heating as you need it.

Its the cheapest way as well as you are mounting units on a wall:

Check out this link for a range of info on units available etc: Particulary first thread on the first page.

Yes, agreed, I read a lot of your comments before, and investigated as I would like the cheapest, performing system. 1) I don't want things on inside walls 2) I don't like air blowing around & 3) a multi split system isn't that much cheaper & I guess 4) I'm just damn fussy. Once had a warm air gas system, didn't like it. T
PS: Would love to have a summer in the UK where A/C was needed :)

I work nights so require the ac as cant have the windows open even if its only slightly warm outside so need the ac so i can sleep. I have very large bay windows and even the winter sun coming through these windows can make the room to 30C.

I also live on the ground floor flat so cant have windows open in rooms I am not in.

Yes, in your case I can see the need for A/C. T
