You say you already have one disabled child and you don't know what caused it

All kinds of things (from babies being premature to mis-handled births) could cause a child to be born with difficulties. I'm not a medical expert but I also have a son with special needs and it wasn't down to the things I ate, it was all to do with genetics.

I craved sawdust when pregnant with my ds. We had a hamster and I used to get the bag out and sit there sniffing it, I did want to have a chew but resisted lol, it's a very strange feeling.

I'm 33 weeks pregnant and am craving soap badly. I had this with my two previous children and they came out ok :rotfl: well one is disabled but i'm sure its not soap related
anyway my OH isnt happy I am eating it, he says he is going to ban it and throw it all out but any one with a pregnancy craving will know what I mean when I say 'I NEED IT!!!!'
So is there anything dangerous in the soap to cause harm to baby? Its the cream bars of solid soap, the cream bath and the triple moisturising cream wash :o

This highlighted bit and the smilies make this part of the post very flippant. I think this is why chika made this comment.

I've never had a child so I may be speaking out of turn and I may well get stoned for this but here goes. Are you crazy? You're seriously eating something that could endanger your unborn child?! You say you already have one disabled child and you don't know what caused it, can you be 100% certain that it wasn't the soap? IMO you're being rather stupid and irresponsible. I hope this child comes out healthy dispite what you choose to put in your mouth.

I think people are being unfair on chika, no offence was intended to anyone with disabled children and don't think this poster was suggesting that disabilites were the fault of the mother and tbh the subject would not have came up unless the OP had not raised it herself.

FWIW I think the OP could have worded her original post better even the removal of the smilies and the words 'i'm sure' could have have avoided any unnessesary upset being caused.

She ate it was back in the 50s ,she would hide under the stairs with a tin and just dip her fingers into the tin and lick them ,it had to be black polish she would hide because she did not like people knowing about it .
I craved black shapes dog biscuits and would eat them when no one was around. My iron was very low as was my mums , My sister craved plaster and would scratch the walls and then bite her nails , we women are very strange when pregnant .

Ewww, I think i'd hide too! My DD eats dog biscuits

    Hi
Im sure you know soap is a no no-hence your post,so well done on trying to deal with it. Not sure if this will help but what about having a box of you fav sweets/food hidden away-so when you get craving you go to your secret stash and have a naughty treat? What Milky Bar? creamy, solid and smells great. Good Luck

I don't think my post was unfair. There was nothing on there that made me sound like I was having a go or I was offended by Chika's comment. I was merely stating a fact - many things can cause difficulties.

Women have always eaten strange things and sometimes things that were not very safe to eat during pregnancy.
    It's very hard not to.
My particular cravings were for sticks of chalk,(I went through packets of the stuff) and roses.I ate loads of them out the garden.
When I was in hospital the lady in the next bed used to nibble on fire lighters. She'd craved them all her pregnancy.
    Her son was fine.
The staff never batted an eyelid, mind you that was in the days before everyone became paranoid about everything.
My daughter had a craving for compost and used to keep a fresh little bag of it with her in her handbag to sniff and lick now and again.
Pregnant women's cravings are very hard to resist.

I agree your post was not unfair. The 2/3 previous posts on the same subject were.
I was certain I had put another sentence under your post that I quoted that said something along the lines of your post stating the facts without being angry with chika
That'll teach me to type and juggle a baby at the same time!
Sorry for any offence I may have caused you as it was not meant :o

It's no probs, I wasn't offended, I just thought I may came across as being angry or upset!

I feel guilty about my wee boy as I knew the whole time I was carrying him that there was something not quite right but the midwife just kept telling me that the heartbeat is fine so nothing to worry about. We're not given any other scan other than the 12week one but I spend hours on that machine that they strap to you to check movements and still no-one listened so there was no way of telling. I personally don't feel that my carvings for pot noodles could have caused Down's Syndrome.

  • OP if you really need to eat soap then you could buy some from Lush. They're products are 100% natural and at this time of the year they do a soap called snowcake which you could pretend is dove!
