I would certainly ask what vitamins/minerals my body might be telling me it needed in those circumstances - though, if I had decided to get pregnant, then I would have been on a super-duper healthy diet for some months beforehand "projected Conception Date" personally - to give my baby and myself the best possible chance of good health.

What I dont understand is why anyone wouldnt just sit there and tell themselves "dont be stupid - you know this is a bad idea" and then find something else to do instead. Even if I was prepared to play "ducks and drakes" with my own health - I would be just so well aware that I would be endangering my baby-to-be by being so stupid as to give in to any wierd ideas my hormones/etc had..

Having said that...I do find myself extremely puzzled as to how on earth I spot all those women who are pregnant/have young children BUT are busy smoking a cigarette...so I guess some people arent in the slightest bit concerned with their childrens health...
  • I totally agree with the smoking thing, i really hate to see a pregnant woman sith a cigarette hanging out of her mouth, especially outside maternity units.
That is really ignoring comon sense health advice, and it really annoys me.
I feel the same about drinking in pregnancy, and both can easily be avoided if you care anything about your unborn child, but i guess some women don't care that much to give up the fags and booze, they are simply too selfish.

    Quite!

I do feel SO tempted to walk up to women like that and go "You CHOSE to get pregnant - now deal with it...and look after that poor baby-to-be of yours."

Not everyone plans it - contraception fails and you do your best from the moment you find out you're pregnant. At least, that's what happened with me.

As already stated, it's a very, very strong urge to resist. It's really hard to explain if you've not felt it before. To be honest, I never understood it fully until I was put in the situation myself.

I take it you haven't been a smoker? Don't get me wrong, I really don't agree with smoking and drinking in pregnancy and it isn't something I do myself but...having seen you try to explain what pregnancy cravings are like, you get some sort of idea how a smoker feels when they need a cigarette. It can actually be quite painful to give up and doing it in pregnancy, without some of the usual supports such as NRT or medication, must be so very difficult.

As I said, I don't condone it, but I can understand just how difficult these women find it to give up.

    just my 2 pence...

OP, I find parma violet sweeties and turkish delight taste quite soapy. I can see where another poster is coming from with the lavender idea too. Hope you find something that suits.

I used to eat bath sponges :)
And the smell of dove bath cream - never ate any BUT used to smell it all the time.
I still get a bit of a sponge moment now (dd 3 1/2 ds 19mths).

I can`t see it doing any harm if you have done it before and doing it now. Maybe stop buying it and see ho you go though if your worried x

  • Please stop eating it. Think of the pressure you're putting your placenta under. It's feeding your baby and trying to deal with anything nasty that could affect your baby. You don't want it failing. That must be motivation enough.

to the op - sympathise totally - i had soap cravings realy really bad. midwife gave me this advice and it worked - i used to dig my nails inot the bar of soap in the morning, really get it under the nails, then sniff my fingers all day - and sneak in a lick if i had to!!!!
unless you've had this compulsion you cannot understand the overwhelming need to have soap!!
btw - had this with nos 3 and 4 and both were bouncing healthy babies

Ah, it must be a lovely, straightforward world you live in!!!

You know what, life doesn't always work out like that, some of us get knocked up by accident, stumble through pregnancy and early parenthood making a slightly ham-fisted job of it, but it all works out ok. Kind of. By and large. For the most part. In its own sweet way. You get the picture.
  • I don't think my post was harsh in the slightest, i thought it was cruel to remind the OP that she already had a disabled child, and the fact that she is wanting to indulge herself with soap could contribute to another disabled child was uncalled for.
    .

I think you and the post above you were both replying at the same time, to the previous post. Don't think they ment you were harsh, but the one you were also replying to. Not sure though!

I've no idea why anyone would want to eat soap, despite cravings. It can't be good though.
  • How about eating lots of coriander? I hate the stuff because it tastes like soap to me (as it does to many people)
