I was actually considering getting him to return the phone however his last email claiming he done it all last week has made me more suspicious.

Anyone got any ideas what might happen if it goes to dispute? I have never had to do it before. Also because the phone is under warranty would paypal go in my favour as if its confirmed faulty he can just send it off and get replaced?

I am also going to ring the Leicester Apple store to ask about there procedures on checking iPhones and the O2 shop

As far as I'm concerned I sent that phone working and have used it for the last 6 months as my main phone.

    What to do you reckon?

I guess he has broken the phone, he doesn't sound too familiar with any paypal processes so I'd keep your communication up until 45 days is up.

Surely a career scammer would have won the paypal dispute by now and have returned you an empty box ?

I wouldn't trust this chap further than I could throw him... a - NEVER refund until you have an item returned. b - he's likely wrecked it by jailbreaking it.

I would insist on a report from Apple to verify that it's the handset that is faulty and with any luck that report should also verify if the handset has been jailbroken or not :)
I guess he may refuse and return the item to you and file a dispute - in which case obviously go through the steps for ensuring it's the right item (and not a bag of rice or wrong IMEI) and get the report yourself :) If it's faulty then fair do's - if it's not but has been jailbroken get the report and scan it and send to him asking him to send you the money for the return postage so you can return it to you - as a goodwill gesture you won't charge him for wasting your time ;)

  • Happened to one of my friends and he suspected that they had jail broken it, and because the seller asked him how to jail break it! Suffice to say my mate asked him for a screen shot of the phone and, it has been jail broken! Dont refund, just refuse delivery!

Hes not a scammer but I believe he or his mate has fudged the jailbreak and now does not know how to repair it so wants his money back because paypal covers him.

If this goes to paypal dispute the buyer will get his full refund as he will say it never worked correctly from the start.
  • in which case my comment about the serial numbers and invisible security markings would likely frighten him off.

If he is being deceitful and claiming that the phones fault which he caused is the responsiblity of the seller then he is a scammer, he may not be a seasoned one but he is still scamming.

okay prob a first timer scammer I bet he has very good rating or the seller would not go through with him.

Maybe tell him to send the iphone so that you can check to see if it has been tampered with or if in fact it has been jailbroken which sounds more like the problem he is having.....Then do as Peter said, that the serials, invisible security markings will be checked together with the images you took of the phone before sending it out. Then see how he reacts to that....
  • Why even entertain this kid, by letting him return it? Just direct him here to fix it http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2008/10/09/how-to-problems-with-your-iphone-restore/
  • How many days has he got left to make a formal claim?
