When I took a broken iphone to the Apple store it was replaced after a few quick goes at repairing it. They asked if it was still under warranty and I said yes - no further checks were done.

Get him to make an appointment with the genius bar http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/geniusbar/ It is free, and they should be able to tell what (if anything) is wrong.

How long did you have the phone? Did they replace it straight away? and also as I got mine via O2 wouldn't that make a difference if taken to a Apple store?

Did they not have to check name/address details etc?

Also if a iPhone is jailbroken would that void the warranty? cannot it not be totally reset as if it had never been done?

I am slightly annoyed that he has totally avoided my questions about the O2 shop that I asked.

I reckon the chap is in late teens, early twenties, he won it on the 24th Nov and got it on the 27th. First I heard from him was the 8th, so had it 12 or so days before contacting me.

Did they not have to check name/address details etc? Not in my case.

At this point I would ring him and try to get to the bottom of it.
You'll probably scare the hell out of him by doing that which can only be a good thing!
Kudos for going to such trouble giving him detailed technical advice.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j
  • Whilst it might be a good idea to telephone him, it also indicates your willingness to use the telephone as a means to communicate, which unfortunate makes communication faster, as someone previously said you really want to try and string this one out to the 45 day mark if possible.

Stick to e-mail and don't be too keen to reply, send him lenghty e-mails asking questions and if he fails to answer any of them, e-mail him back and ask him to please answer those questions, this should hopefully make things drag on.
  • Here are some things that you can ask, one e-mail at a time.

Please confirm the phones IMEI number.

What software version is it running.

What is the software version of your friends phone that you compared it to.

I am sure others on the forum can come up with other pointless questions to ask.

Is it the Mac or WIndows version :P
