he hasnt had a change in nappy brand or wipes used [between ourselves and nursery]. the only change is he now wears one of them fleecy sleepsuits that zip up that we put on backwards because he cannot keep his clothes on and removes all clothes and nappy in the middle on the night or early morning [6am]. obviously i change his nappy if he does wake for that reason. the boy just wants to be naked all the time.

I would bet money that his last few back molars are coming through. These teeth are usually the last through, and the teething for these can be much worse than the others. My eldest was really bad with nappies and teething pain on these last few teeth.

May be a good time to bite the bullet and do the potty training thing.

Goodness me! If you look closely you'll see I posted at the same time as you so didn't know you'd posted that.

I was just coming to post to say sorry as we cross-posted, but maybe I'm actually sorry I tried to help at all after a response like that!

I was also wondering about thrush? If he's all warm and toasty in his fleece sleepsuit it might be just the sort of warm damp environment that a yeast infection would love. Mind you if the stuff you've got in the fridge is Timodene I think that has some anti-fungal in it, but only mild.

When my DD gets sore sometimes the only thing that improves it, is to clean and thoroughly dry the area, then apply plain old Vaseline (or Boots own normally) which acts as a barrier and seems to give her skin chance to heal without yet more wee/poo getting to it. Makes cleaning poo off much easier too so not so much wiping of sore skin. Sounds mad as it's just vaseline, but honestly sometimes it's the only thing that works.

If it might be toxic poo from teething, a spoonful of gripe water can help neutralise the acid that comes out the other end!

Hope his poor little bot is better soon.

an old remedy - try a salt bath - use a small handful of salt to ease the irritation. the really old remedy here is fullers earth - available from chemists - and my mum says was used where nappy rash was really bad! dust onto bum like talc. my mum always swore by talc rather than cream and she used the old terry nappies. try different things hun. could be your babes bum will respond better to one.

Ant, have you tried Bepanthen (sp) cream?
Good advice above about using olive oil instead of baby wipes.
    Also a tepid bath.
But i would get a prescription for a different type of cream tomorrow from the Dr if i where you.

Yep Metanium is fantastic. You could also try Aloe Vera gel. Or even natural yogurt believe it or not.

we used metanium and when it cools down a bit swap to bepanthen as its easier to apply

  • I'd suggest that you try putting some dettol in your sons bath water (i find it kills off all sorts of infection) and then smear vaseline thickly over your DS's bum to help keep moisture away from DS's skin. Also if the rash doesn't seem to be healing by wednesday morning or is bleeding then take him to the doctors or A+E because he may need to be prescribed some antibiotic cream.

My son's bottom was red raw when we were on holiday in Florida - the phamarcist suggested Palmers Bottom Butter - worked like a dream, better than any nappy rash cream I'd ever tried (and had the added bonus of making his bum smell chocolatey!!)

He could have thrush, so a visit to the GP may be the order of the day tomorrow.

Everyone has suggested what I was going to suggest - bepanthem, (ah hem)metanium! and conotrane. Quite possibly teething so just bear with it ... as someone suggested, might be a good time to start potty training! Could be thrush which looks a little different to normal nappy rash or the only other thing I can think of is whether he has been unwell recently? A very sore bottom along with being unwell (plus other symtoms of sore hands, and mouth) is a symptom of hand foot and mouth (pretty common in pre-schoolers and my daughter had this and her bottom was red raw - used the creams suggested and it cleared up).
I would think about seeing GP to rule out thrush and try another cream if possible.
    Hope it clears up soon.
