Added to all the above advice, when my DD had bad nappy rash we tried everything, and best of all was the airtime. It was easier as a girl so not quite so messy when they wee, however I found putting cotton pants on or buttoning up vest instead of a nappy was good if they have an accident it semi contains it, and also when she had broken skin meant no 'fluff' or anything got stuck to it. It would clear it up very quickly. She only has had nappy rash when teething, and like someone else mentioned the teething powders (or the active ingredient Chamomilla) is really good for neutralising their stomach acid and making the poo less toxic.
I never used any of the nappy creams mentioned above as personally I think treating sore skin with more chemicals is (IMHO) counterproductive (unless medically needed like for thrush etc) I used a nappy wash that I make myself by boiling rosemary in water, waiting for it to cool then adding some tea tree oil, and some lavendar oil and olive oil. I then use this with cotton wool (or toilet tissue for a big poo!) to clean up bum instead of wipes. Then a natural bum cream as a barrier at night. My DD's has always cleared fairly quickly, except one time when I thought it was the usual teething rash, but was actually thrush. When this was diagnosed and treated it cleared up very quickly.

Hope you can shift it soon as I always felt so guilty even though I knew there was nothing more I could do. Poor little bum bum! x

ETA: With thrush it was different to her normal rash as it appears like little dots that join together to make a rash iyswim. You will prob be able to see the dot's near the edge of the rash if it is thrush. Def worth getting a Dr's opinion if in any way unsure, but seeing as you said you had been prescribed nappy cream you prob all ready had him checked.

Everyone has suggested what I was going to suggest - bepanthem, (ah hem)metanium! and conotrane. Quite possibly teething so just bear with it ... as someone suggested, might be a good time to start potty training! Could be thrush which looks a little different to normal nappy rash or the only other thing I can think of is whether he has been unwell recently? A very sore bottom along with being unwell (plus other symtoms of sore hands, and mouth) is a symptom of hand foot and mouth (pretty common in pre-schoolers and my daughter had this and her bottom was red raw - used the creams suggested and it cleared up).
I would think about seeing GP to rule out thrush and try another cream if possible.
    Hope it clears up soon.

he has had an annoying cough and cold like the rest of us for a week or so now.

i have noticed his temp up a bit but this is through feel only and hasnt felt so hot for me to get the thermometer out. thankfully he has just decided taking medcine off a spoon is better than mummy and the syringe-sit technique taught to me by the hospital.

he went to bed @ 6pm and havent heard a peep since.

i feel so sorry for him. i thouht, being helpful, i would coat a nappy in sudocreme earlier before i put it on him and he screamed and refused ppint blank to have it put on.

    my poor boris.

I haven't used yoghurt but I did use acidophilious capsules on her bum. It is basically the good bacteria (like in the yoghurt) and is in a powder which comes in a capsule. I put the cream on and then sprinkled this over the top and worked a dream. I use it when I get thrush too and works really quickly (without having to use canesten as I'm PG and hate having to use it a lot)

If you put cream on then it will coat the nappy and stop urine being absorbed away from the skin. Then it'll burn even worse!
The trick is to clean up, then put the cream on. Let it soak into the skin and then put the nappy on. I always did what another poster advised and button up the vest or put knickers on to stop fluff and contain accidents. Just for long enough to let the cream soak in then you can get the nappy back on.

Oh and I luuuuuuuuuurve the smell of metanium and drapolene!

I can't help with cream as I use some Polish wonder stuff, but don't cover the rash with vaseline. The air will never get in there and heal the wounds.
I would like to publicly agree with just a pair of pants. He can't possibly pee on a socket then and poo isn't automatically going to go everywhere. I tried recently to heal up J's rash whilst using nappies, but it took ages to go away and any real improvement was seen when he went without. He spent a lot of time in his favourite bath too .
Poor monkey, hope he gets better x

  • I had a 'hot' baby. Old ladies would tut as we'd be out in december in babygrow and blanket. He'd howl until I stripped a layer off!! Even now (5) he prefers scampering around naked!
He's also got sensitive skin so I couldn't use fabric conditioner at all.
We found the best thing was a baby sleeping bag changing between long sleeved and short sleeved babygrows underneath. That may cut down the hot bum and nappy rash.
PLenty of fresh air during the day will help shift it. Not practical but we put lots of towels down.

My niece had a really sore bum for a while and it looked awful and so painful. After all creams being tried, it turned out to be eczema and nothing but hydrocortisone would clear it up. Need to get that from doc though cos it has steroid in, i use it for my son's eczema too and it's the only thing that's ever worked.
