Such as trying to find a mains power point to recharge its sealed-in battery.
iSound Battery for £13.99 is a decent option. Will recharge my iPhone to about 3/4 capacity in approximately 30 mins.

But do try iTunes; there are some 220 million iPod users out there, and only a few million hate iTunes. ;)
There is a lot to like about iTunes, but I do feel it is rather bloated and no longer the streamlined program it used to be. They need to make it snappier™, else at the rate things are going, I too will be seeking a different program to manage my media needs.

    Edit:
I forgot to say if you're after something cheap-ish and iPod-ish, the iPod Shuffle 4GB can be bought for £30 with voucher code ZG003 at very.co.uk if you're a new customer. It's size I feel is ideal for exercise activities.

Android has lots of apps, but as you correctly point out, not the breadth of selection available for the iPod Touch.

The Archos 5 uses the same processor as the iPod Touch, but it has half the amount of RAM. It also has a shorter battery life, and that larger screen costs you in terms of portability; it's wider and taller, twice as thick, and weighs more than twice as much.

But marty it runs linux so doesn't need that much ram. Besides 220 quid for 250gb you cant argue with that.

That depends very much what you want to run on it.

    Looks good.

Wouldn't it be great if manufacturers built solar cells into the casing of mobile 'phones and laptops? (Even in Britain. :( )

I suppose one of the reasons they don't is because idiots would leave them out in the sun to charge and promptly wreck them.

Fools do that with solar-powered watches.

I quiet like the archos 5 android,

    Plus:

Its got apps (never used them but apparently you need them)
    You can browser the internet
    Big screen
    Big memory
    Supports lots of formats.
    Expandable memory.
    No itunes.

    Cons: (provided by marty)

    Half the ram of ipod
    Thicker than ipod
    Weighs more than ipod

Think its gonna be the sansa clip and archos 5.

The clip is a fantastic bit of kit, so light and the battery really does give about 15 hours. Without it I wouldn't have run my half marathon as fast as I did.
I do love my touch too for everything else but is is fixed memory, the size is much better than any Archos though.
What about a used touch, jail break it and then use any software you like to manage it ;) then you can just transfer stuff on and off between shifts. In saying that you watch something, delete it after you've watched and know you need to fill it up again.

    Also:

Far fewer apps than the iPod
    Far fewer accessories
No iTunes movie or TV show downloads.

Also, can it download apps, music, podcasts, etc, over the air?

Im pretty sure I'll not need to use 100,000 apps if I need any at all, I've managed so far without. I just want something I can watch movies on listen to music on and browser internet, not interested in accessories. I wouldn't download movies and tv shows from itunes in any respect. And to the last part I dont know.

I'll be making a decision when I can see it in the flesh so to speak.

    Yes, why wouldn't it?

    Other Archos advantages -

    PVR dock available as accessory
    HDMI mini dock (720p capability)
    GPS capability included
