DoubleTwist might be worth checking out too.

But do try iTunes; there are some 220 million iPod users out there, and only a few million hate iTunes. ;)

Another reason why itunes isn't top of the list is I would need to manage it from linux as well.

Just been looking at the Archos 5, it has android, yum!
  • Might I suggest the Archos 705 Wifi? Cheap at £150 for 80GB, yet still fully-featured. Has Wifi so when you are bored, and if there is a wireless connection in the vicinity, you can access the WWW. There is always the 160GB option, but you will nead LOADS of songs to fill even 80GB lol ;)

Don't forget all those lovely apps for the iPod Touch (100,000 and counting) which blow away anything available for any other PMP.

You may think you aren't interested in using them, but once you grow used to having access to them, you may wonder why anyone would want to use anything else.

Might I suggest the Archos 705 Wifi?

There's also the Archos 5 at £199.99 for 60GB (or more, all the way up to 250GB).

Android has lots of apps, but as you correctly point out, not the breadth of selection available for the iPod Touch.

The Archos 5 uses the same processor as the iPod Touch, but it has half the amount of RAM. It also has a shorter battery life, and that larger screen costs you in terms of portability; it's wider and taller, twice as thick, and weighs more than twice as much.
