Looking at getting two mp3 players...

The first on is for the bike ride to work and whilst exercising so am looking for something small. I was looking a something like the Sansa Clip 2-8gb with radio but open to anything better.

Now the other one is for at work when I'm meant to be working, more of a media player with as large a memory as possible. Not sure about this one so help appreciated.

Obviously I'd like it as cheap as possible but that doesn't necessarily cheap.

    Have you considered an iPod?

Sansa clip for the bike and Sansa Fuze for work. The Fuze has a memory card slot for expansion. (So does the new Clip+ for a little more than the clip). Sound quality, build quality, UI and ergonomics are great (for the Fuze at least, but the Clip uses the same sound chip and UI so shuld be pretty much the same).

For the bike ride to work, a Sansa is probably a good idea. It's pretty cheap, small, and it wouldn't be the end of the world if it ended up under the tyres of some crazed motorist.

As for the large capacity one, a 160 GB iPod Classic (£189 from Apple) might fit the bill. Its screen isn't huge though, so if you want to use it for watching movies or TV shows, it might not be so great.

If you wanted a larger screen, the 64 GB iPod Touch (£285 from Amazon) might be a better buy. It also has other diversions to help you get through your busy day. ;)

I'll look into the fuze, but would like a bigger screen. I would consider an ipod if theres nothing better but would be a last resort, not down to it being apple this is a purely itunes thing unless theres another way on getting media on it.

If you do get an iPod, I would suggest manually managing your music. From my experience, iTunes seems to behave a lot better this way.

I would agree with the ipod as well - I also manually manage the music, and have never had a problem.... we have five ipods in the house and all still behave flawlessly.

I would caution about the use of a player when riding, particularly when commuting. The reduction in traffic awareness can besignificant, and when I am on my bike, even without ear phones in, I can get sneaked up on...

Such as trying to find a mains power point to recharge its sealed-in battery.

Or a computer to charge it from.

Regardless, with a 30 hour battery life for audio and a 6 hour battery life for video, I doubt that'll be a problem.

I'm assuming he does some work during the day. ;)

Ok seems like the clip is ideal then, though point noted about using it whilst biking especially as I'll be biking through a city.

Really not keen on using itunes full stop. Any other options for a media player?

On the work front sometimes my job requires me to sit on my !!!! and do nothing for the whole shift. Boring but still getting paid the same, hence the media player.

I'd suggest you give iTunes a try and see how you like it (you can download it for free after all).

And there are plenty of other iPod managers out there if you decide it's not for you.
