Alared- I quite agree with you, my house is wired for BT but I went to Virgin as it was cheaper.I now want Broadband but need a BT line I bet they will not lay new cable, just fiddle about at the exchange and charge me the full installation rate.

If work needs to be carried out at the exchange then it needs to be charged. Its safe to say they won't lay new cable unless you're living in a new build.

Does anyone know if there is anybody else who can connect a phone line other than BT. Unfortunately this is the second time i am moving in to a 'NEW BUILD' house within a year and a half. When i moved in to here i had to pay £75 connection fee, now i have just found out that it has been increased to £125. A whopping £50 increase. How wrong is that!! Last time they came out it took 5 mins. How can they justify all that money?
BT customers who want to take advantage of cheap Broadband should be aware that if you have been a BT customer for less than 12 months on top of Broadband cost you have to pay £70 cancellation charge to BT Plus the £30 one off payment to O2 for instance. That is £100 dead money before you can get Broadband.

Or just see out the contract with BT so you don't have to pay the cancellation charge?!

Can't be bothered to read through the whole thread, but another option to BT is plusnet - connection charge is £105 and line rental (with free evening and weekend calls is £9.99) seems a good deal to me - especially when they have the best customer service around (24/7 uk support - with a slight yorkshire accent :)

You don't cancel your BT line to get O2 broadband, so no £100 dead money!

I eventually bit the bullet and decided to get phoneline put in by BT as had limited options with regards to getting cable internet and had decided on giving O2 a try since have an O2 phone, would get discounted rate and read great reviews.
Phoned up last Tuesday quoting the discount offer for signing up for 18 months, guy knew all about it and got it no problem at all, phone was up and running on Monday.
Got welcome letter from BT today and the discount has been taken off fine but it says I have signed up to Unlimited Anytime Plan with Special Offer at £5.95 a month, this was never mentioned on the phone at all, is this a condition of the discounted installation or are BT trying to con me into something I don't want or need ??
  • Apologies for not reading the whole thread (limited internet time at present as still trying to get a phone line). Just moved into a flat but we are only here for 4 months, BT want £125 to reconnect the line and a 12 month minimum contract. Previous tenant was on Telewest (Virgin Media) but they also want a 12 month minimum contract and £30 connection fee. So........can I 'come back to BT' (from Telewest/Virgin Media) as I have the previous phone number (but not the Telewest acct number) without paying a reconnection fee and without being tied to a 12 month contract?
