  • Virgin media offer slow broadband for £20 a month with free phone and tv(crap) the free phone line is only for virgin numbers, now unless everyone you call has a virgin line you wont save any money and the tv is pathetic, the box is slow takes about 5 secs to change channel (sky is instant) and all the free channels are crap, the broadband is slower than most free broadband you can get with a BT line. IN THE LONG RUN OVER A YEAR YOU WONT SAVE MONEY WITH ANY VIRGIN MEDIA TV, PHONE OR BROADBAND PACKAGE.

So pay the one off £125 fee for BT line and then £10.50 a month and get a SKY tv package (sky is great) for £16 a month with free phone with free uk landline calls (all numbers) and free broadband (faster than virgin £20 a month) honest. All in all choose your own tv package, free phone and broadband for only £26.50 a month including line rental. I know BT line is cheaper over a year so pay that charge because elseware will rip you off.

Sorry but i think you have got a couple of points not wrong as such but, need clarifiaction. I just spoke to Sky this morning with regard to moving ect, you only get the free calls and free broadband if your exchange isn't a "connect" exchange don't fully understand this but, its somthing to do with wether sky can install their own equipment in the exchange or have to rent BT's if they have to rent its called a "connect" exchange. If your exchange is a connect one you'll have to pay £17 for broadband and £5 calls package which includes free calls to 01, 02 & 03 numbers, 25% of mobil calls made from your land line and free international calls to certain countries (Mine being Spain) and then you sky TV on top of that and pay BT £10.75 for line rental which they tie you into for 12 months when they connect you. Oh and to just move you sky stuff ie, you take your old box, cables (from tv to Box not thoses from the dish) and remote and they will reconnect you at your new address for £60, not too bad as you would like the peace of mind knowing it connected properly and should give you hassle free viewing for a couple of years, no they will only warrenty the connection work and dish for 90 days after that if you have any problems it's down to you to pay for it.

I believe the BT connection fee is far too high - a blatant abuse of monopoly position.

I have now discovered that to use the phone line which is already connected to my own flat in Kent I have to pay £124.99 because I haven't lived there for nearly two years.

I have been a BT customer for years. The line from the exchange to the house is still there - BT have chosen to issue the line to someone else - their choice, not mine!

Anyway, I have complained to Ofcom and after a long time trying to negotiate with BT they have eventually agreed to charge £29.99 if I will enter into a minimum commitment of 18 months and agree to have calls through them.

I seldom use the landline to make calls and need the line to receive calls and to use my free Sky broadband.

I still dont like the thought of paying £29.99 but I guess I'll have to stomach it.

I hope this information will help anyone else in similar circumstances - complain to Ofcom and negotiate with BT to reduce the charge.

wondering if anyone can help me:
Basically I have just bought a house (within 3 months). I rang bt to ask if I can reconnect (i also have the previous owners number). First I was told that I would not be charged but I would have to call again later. I called later and another person told me that I would need to get a new line installed as the previous owner "ceased" the line a few months ago.

The wiring is in tact, although there is no dialing tone. Is BT trying to mislead me or would I still need to pay the fee?

    Thanks

Since there is no dialiing tone I'm afraid you will have to pay the fee. You may want to consider the £29.99 deal as stated a few post above

what about if you live in rented accommodation? Usually contract are only for 6months. That would mean £125 every 6 months

This is particulary shocking. Especially if you are a student or unemployed.

    Not necessarily - see HERE.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
