BT Connection Charges (merged threads)

The charges you get depend on work involved - even your phone supplier usually does not know until the charges come through on your invoice!
The charges will be based on the new suppliers price list, not on the work involved.

I had this problem with BT and pointed out that 'legally' they cannot charge me the £101.19 Cancellation charge when I vacated the property before the one year contract expired.
I explained that I knew a new tennant had moved in (within weeks) they could not prove loss of income (other than the several weeks). They have ceased correspondence on the matter, no amounts have been taken from my account and no negative impact has been recorded on my credit history. They were trying to "double-dip" at the same location for the same period of time. This is probably quite widespread and likely not allowed.0 -
Well, success is mine. After skimming through this thread, I rang up BT to try my chances.
Flirted outrageously and got free reconnection for Wednesday. It does seem to be luck of the draw - I tried to order online and they insisted on charging me 125 quid for reconnection...Best wins: Luxury weekend in Russia, family holiday to France, catered BBQ for 20, Selfridges shopping spree, jolly to Majorca, £1,000 See Tickets vouchers, £500 John Lewis vouchers, five-star weekend in Provence!

I agree that the fee should be paid in a new property but not when the hardware has already been installed in a property ie tenants moved out and the new occupier has to fork out another £125.00!!0

I have a dial tone in my new flat which was vacated about a week ago by the previous tenant but BT are insisting that I pay a £125 reconnection fee.
At first BT said (despite the dial tone) there was no line in the flat! Then when I managed with some difficulty to get the previous phone number via the letting agents, who told me it was a BT line, BT mentioned that they did have a record of the number but then said something about it not being a recent BT line. The previous tenants had SKY so that would confirm that there had been a BT line.
After spending nearly two hours (3 calls) phoning BT and getting past all around the BT organisation with different comments from each part I decided to stop for today.
What I would like to know is: what grounds can BT use to justify £125 reconnection when there is a phone with a dial tone in the flat?0 -

I started off at 150 on all 3 calls to BT but was passed to various departments!
SKY Talk reckon the flat did not have a phone connected to them.
I thought you had to have a BT line to get connected to Sky. Can you be using something like Talk Talk and be connected to SKY?0 -
Hi,
We recently (last week) moved from Bournemouth to South Wales and wanted to take our phone and Broadband with us. The property we moved into has a BT line but it has not been used for over a year. We have all the details from previous usage as the last occupants were my sister and her husband. We were expecting to pay the £125 re-connection charge and also to expect some reduction of Broadband quality as the property is in the countryside but after BT had sent engineers out as part of the re-connection procedure we were informed that we would have to pay £1600 to reconnect as the old line had been re-allocated and some new poles would need erecting/replacing. The original charge would have been £2600 but as we were existing BT customers it had been reduced to £1600. Needless to say we were shocked and cancelled our accounts.
Is this legal/right? I can only find references to a £125 re-connection charge to cover engineering, even for new builds.

I think BT must bear the first £3400 ish cost of installing a line, anything over that the customer pays. http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/uso/statement/ is old but I presume still stands.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0

thanks to this site i found the £30 connection fee offer, which only took 98mins to organise via several BT departments. engineer arrived ten days later but couldnt fit the line without permission of neighbours to access their gardens.........still waiting.......
