From what I understand, if you want sky phone package you have to keep paying BT line rental anyway. As such I dont see that you would be terminating the contract early. I might be wrong.
That used to be the case but Sky now offers line rental too (at £10/month compared to BT's £10.50).

You don't have to take it - and, because of their recent price hikes for 0845 and 0870 calls amongst other things, I'd advise people not to despite the potential 50p per month saving.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I am moving house next week so rang BT to switch my landline. I was told that as the line was not connected at the exchange there would be a fee of £125. When i raised the offer if I sign up to an 18 month contract I was put on hold. He came back to say that was only for new customers and not for those moving home.

I have since signed up with Virgin.

I am in a bit of a situation too - moving into a flat where there is no line. I don't dispute paying £125 connection, as there is no way of getting around this. BUT is there anyway I can get out of the 12 month contract that BT then lock me into?

I'd like to go with TalkTalk's £16.39 package with everything included but i'd still have to pay £10.50 to BT unless I pay £70 to break my contract, which I can't really afford.

Has anyone an idea of a way around this?

Doesn't have to be BT that connects you. Talktalk could but won't, they prefer you to pay another company to install a line then reap the benefits. Only recourse is to find a provider who's willing to install a line then let you leave straight away free of charge.

I asked Talktalk to connect me seeing as their website actually says that they buy lines from BT in wholesale and these are maintained by BT, so if they have a relationship with BT like that why couldnt they do it...but they wont.

Does anyone have any ideas who would install the line and leave straight away?

Post Office Homephone. I think you have to give 15 days notice though.

I just checked on their site and it says "Standard residential line required".

Any other ideas of who will connect the line and let me leave?
