  • That's interesting... So OpenReach is to comms providers as Transco is to gas suppliers

Thanks for your feedback Sunil - much appreciated!

  • Thanks to everyone contributing to this forum, I have made my first saving!

I've just moved into a 3-year-old flat on a 6 month rental contract. I rang BT and they told me that the flat had been disconnected and I needed to pay £124.99 to get an engineer out and connect me.

After checking this thread, I got a phone from home, plugged it into the flat's phone line (getting a ring tone) and dialled 17070. It then gave me the number attached to that line.

When I called BT back and talked to the sales guy, he told me again it would be £124.99. I told him the line was not disconnected and had a number assigned to it, so no engineer was needed. He just kept on saying it was disconnected and after I firmly said it was not, he put me through to the Service department. 10 minutes talking to them and they could not seem to see what status the line was in, so they put me through to New Accounts. There, a nice lady called Jo confirmed that no engineer was needed, I'd be charged nothing for reconnection and it would activated on Monday. She even gave me free evening and weekend calls!

This is one great site! My savings start here!

Well done. Beware though, you have agreed to a 12 month contract and, if you leave after 6 months, will be liable for a cancellation charge of up to £70.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

BT are currently offering half price connection if you agree to keeping your line rental with them for 18 months and make 10 calls per month/30 per quarter via them (though these calls can include the "free" weekend calls they give on BT Option 1)

You need to ask for the offer though

    Regards
    Sunil

Can you get cashback on bt deals????

Plus they will charge him for breaching his Free? Evening and Weekend Calls Contract.
  • I am moving back to the UK and plan to use Talk Talk as my landline and call provider so I can get the free broadband. The house that I am moving to appears to have a BT socket. From what I understand if BT reconnect the line I wil be charged £124.99 plus £70 for transferring the line to Talk Talk within the 12 month contract. Can Talk Talk reconnect the line or is BT the only company which can do it?

TalkTalk could connect your line if they wanted to, just like other telcomms companies do for their customers, but they choose to make you pay for this!
