I can understand why BT are going to charge me to move house.... but when I said I'm not happy about the £125, they did the hold on... oh my manager has just said they'll do it for half price if I sign a new contract.
Does this mean I'm going to get a cheaper engineer or parts..?!!!!!!
This whole competition thing is a farce... I want to go on to talk talk, but I can't because I must sign up to BT for 18 months to get a phone line or pay their getout costs.. Where's the competition in that?!!!
I personally think BT is terrible, I have billing problems 4 out of 6 months I've been with them at this address and think 1 hour on hold to get through to India who don't understand and transfer/cut me off to someone else is a disgrace. If I hear "Sorry you are waiting, we are extremely busy processing all our new broadband customers" again I will scream!!!!!!!!!0 -

Before you start saying its a farce, the competition thing is in fact very open. Talk Talk have the capability to install lines for customers however they don't feel its financially viable for them as a company to do that.
So what they do is ask the customers to foot the bill & thus the customer incurs any costs in installing the line and a minimum contract (BT introduced this as providers like Talk Talk were just telling customers to sign up and cancel so that Talk Talk didn't have to shell out on installing lines).
Any provider can install lines for customers today, however some refuse not to because it doesn't suit them financially.0 -

TalkTalk could set up the line for you, they just dont.

As Heinz (and Drunkstar and normanmark) mentioned above any provider "could" pay Openreach to connect your line but many prefer not to and make it appear that it is a BT only thing.
You don't "have" to sign up to BT, it's just cheaper for TalkTalk and others to present things in that way.
Madasafish, The Post Office, Plusnet are just 3 companies who will do this for you at a price, plenty competition around if you look.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -

I stand corrected! I suppose its just a cost of living in rented accomodatation and moving twice in a year.
Although I hate BT for making me hold for hours, I was extremely shocked this morning to get through to some lovely helpful ladies in the UK almost straight away who were helpful and even wished me luck with the move. Get rid of the Indian call centre and I'd happily stick with BT!!0 -
Hey guys, I'm moving into my new house this weekend. There is a phone line connected to the house and I was told that Talk Talk was the provider there, the vendor says she has cancelled the contract so the line will be dead.
How will I go about getitng it connected? Will I ring BT or have to ring Talk Talk?
ThanksI :heart2: saving money0 -

TalkTalk only want your custom if you have a BT line. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
My mother who is 75 years old has moved into a sheltered house and needs a phone, BT quoted £125 to reconnect the line although two weeks before they had disconnected the previous tenant, probably at a charge, how many times can they rip off old people. I agree it cost for them to put the line in but then reconnect a number of times over the years and they are in profit. Can BT introduce a reduced rate for OAP, no way.:mad:0

BT now charge to connect a line that is ceased due to the undertakings agreement they made with ofcom (openreach) cheaper prices for other services now mean they have to be made up elsewhere. example BT retail connect the line for free you go to sky for cps BT Retail make zero money yet still foot the loss making bill for line rental hence now a charge. with the creation of openreach there is no reason for cps/reseller or any wlr not connecting or installing lines bypassing BT retail they just refuse due to cost as they dont want to be seen as expensive0
