Has anyone else had to pay this or any tips on how to get this wavered as the female wasn't budging tonight...

Unlike cable companies BT are not allowed to negotiate their charges.

However, they are apparently due to launch a half price connection offer in a week or so..

  • I too am utterly fed up off all this. Having moved into a new build as a tenant I've got to connect the phone line. The £125 is not a problem it's being tied into BT for 12 months when I already had an account I wanted to transfer over!!! I'm contemplating T-mobile Web'n'Walk which does away with any phone lines, no wires...bliss!! http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-phones/internet/laptop/ - any one with experience using this? I'd appreciate your opinions please.

A quick update on my previous post: I just moved into a rented flat where there was a business line. Initial calls to BT resulted in threat of said £124 charge so I delayed.

Eventually I got through to a nice chap (5th time speaking to BT) and said I am moving. He said 'ah yes the business line was cancelled 20 mins ago! I'll move you over, it will come on at midday on friday and there is no charge!'

I left it at that. The phone came on at midday the day I moved and there was no charge.

The midn boggles at how I can get so many different answers from one company. I hope others get it sorted as well. I guess the important thing here is that the previous tennant had already cancelled their line when I called.

  • I am happy to report that after much complaining and phoning BT, and being told that my money (£125) would not be refunded even though I was told by them that there was to be no charge! - I have now been told that it will indeed be returned!

I am currently holding my breath until my next bill arrives but I do at least have a reference number this time so hopefully it is resolved.

    Keep plugging away folks!
  • Rang up BT yesterday via their Reconnect direct number.

I'm a tennant in a build that's been around for 5 years...and has three previous tennants I know of. I moved in with my boyfriend in February. But because of job changes I decided not to tie myself to a phoneline. Until now.

The person I talked to took all my housing details...as I moved out from my fathers house (he pays the bill there) they wanted the house details for there as well. (?) How long I'd been at my new abode etc.

I said to the BT rep that the master box was intact and had the BT logo on it. But since I'd never tested it with a phone I didn't know what state it was in.

She said she would take 10 days to get back to me to let me know if they needed to send someone out. That only when the technician comes out do they know if I will be charged the £124 connection fee. What if he comes out...and doesnt need to do anything...will I still be charged?

They don't know. I'm not paying for him to come out to do nothing. (I'm barely a mile from the exchange..)Tsk!

I said if I got a phone and plugged it in...and it rang a dialling tone and told me my number...would that affect the charge and make it free. the rep said I was to get back to her asap if that was the case.

Well I did the above...and I called back today. This particular rep said it didnt make a difference whether it had a tone or not. I said it did...it proves my end of the phonline is in full working order. The line is NOT ceased but stopped. And that all they needed to do was switch me on.

Er...no. This time she said I has been misinformed. As for the coming out to see the line routine, she said that the 10 day processing of my line 'check-up' will see if the charge applies to me. She said it should not. But as usual couldn't promise anything.

But it the charge did apply and if a techy needed to come out...I could cancel that at anytime, preferably ASAP.

Also according to the rep...you can no longer break up the £124 charge into split payments...you have to pay it all off in your first bill with your landline.

I wouldn't need to be claiming benefits. geez!!!!!!

No two reps tell you the SAME damn thing.

    Hello,

I moved into my new in January and for simplicity's sake i went with Virgin Media as that was working at the time. Now I'm due to end that contract soon and I want to get the same package with Sky (TV, BB & Sky Talk) and BT (line rental only) as i think I can get it cheaper.

Having read through quite few a posts can someone please just double check I've got this right:

    1. The previous owner of the house confirmed that BT's line has not been used for 7 years so a reconnection may or may not cost upto £125  The line is still attached to our house and the costs all depend on the work required to reconnect.

    2. There are no alternatives I would have to initially go with BT before I can make changes such as going over to Talk Talk, etc.

I think this it! So any comments/suggestions would be most welcome!
    Many thanks!

Not as standard though, you would have to ask for it. :)

  • Hi all.

Forgive if the information is allready in this thread but I got upto the third page then read the last and decided to post. So.

I've moved into my housing Association flat last August after it having an extensive refurbishment. I now want internet access and due to not being in a cable area require ADSL along with the landline that it requires.

In my flat there are phone lines installed but with blanking plates rather than sockets. I have rang BT who did have a record but said I'll have to pay £125 after trying to set up an account/test the line.

So if I put some sockets in wired up properly, preferably BT labelled then could I just get a reconnection?

    Thanks

No because you do not have a master socket which needs to be supplied and fitted by BT e.g. an engineer will need to visit, which will result in a connection charge. You are only allowed to fit your own extension sockets, which can legally be wired to the master socket faceplate.
