Hi, I have never posted on here before but wondered if anyone can help me please?

I have just moved to Torquay and don't know what to do about my phone connection. There is currently a BT line being used at the property, the seller is taking the number with them. I have contacted BT to get a number/connection so I can get connected to TalkTalk. I have been told by BT that If I connect with them I will be subject to a 12 month contract or pay £70 disconnection fee if I want to move to talktalk. As I see it I have no choice but to connect with them as I cannot move to talktalk without a current BT number.

Does anyone know if this is this right?

I would really appreciate any advice on the best way to do this,

    Thanks Sally.

Any telephone operator can arrange for a telephone line to be reconnected and issue you with a new number. However, TalkTalk currently refuse to offer that facility to their customers.

Instead, they insist that you get BT Retail to connect you to their service (BT Retail charge anywhere from free to £124.99 depending on the work involved), then they want you to transfer your 'active' line from BT to TalkTalk.

The reason for this is that its a lot cheaper for a telecom operator to take over an 'active' line than pay for a line to be reconnected in the first place.

However, this is very naughty of TalkTalk, as having connected via BT Retail - as BT have told you - you will have entered into a 12 month contract with BT for your line rental with a cancellation penalty of the reminder of your 12 months line rental or £70 (whichever is less) - which is something that TalkTalk don't tell you..!

There are a handful of other companies which do offer to reconnect lines, instead of BT Retail but TalkTalk will only accept 'transfers in' from BT Retail, so you can't do that either..

The question is how badly do you want to join TalkTalk (and why?)

    Regards

Seems about right in the way BT look at things, but perhaps if you already were a Talk Talk customer, then you could ask them (CPW) about your move and their interpretation of your predicament.

Sadly Ofcom dont think that far ahead when they make the rules

Thank You for your quick replies. I wanted to go back to TalkTalk because of how cheap they were before. Around £20 for all my calls, broadband and line rental . I carn't find it any where near as cheap as this.

So it would seem that I have no option than to connect to BT and cancel and pay £70!

There are other providers who will install lines for you who charge around £25/month for calls, broadband and line rental including the Post Office and Vodafone (if you have a mobile contract with them)

Both of whom actually use BT to run their calls and broadband packages :)

However, if you wanted to join TalkTalk - then yes, joining BT and paying £70 seems to be the only real option.

sorry to be so lazy but there seems to be a lot of content here and hopefully someone can answer my question easily.

I moved into a new build over year ago, I now want to get Broadband through BT but don't have a phone line

Am I going to have to pay £125 connection fee?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, unless you can get one of the other firms now allegedly in the business of 'line provision' to do it more cheaply.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

So what exactly is the position with Talk Talk customers wanting to take their service with them?

Surely Carphone Warehouse has some responsibility and a commercial interest in their customers making the move cheaply and efficiently, and not just washing their hands of what is involved.

Thanks, is there a list of these anywhere? will I then have to sign a contract with them?
