Thanks, is there a list of these anywhere? will I then have to sign a contract with them?
Without going into the whole "It's not a good idea to pay line rental to anyone other than BT because of the restrictions (on how you route your calls) that result" and the "Any of the line providers now in the market could connect/reconnect a line - but most won't do so" discussion again, dawney10 posted THIS a while ago.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

So what exactly is the position with Talk Talk customers wanting to take their service with them?

Surely Carphone Warehouse has some responsibility and a commercial interest in their customers making the move cheaply and efficiently, and not just washing their hands of what is involved.

As already explained TT are not interested in signing people up unless you are an existing BT Customer with a BT line. They will then be pleased to sign you up subject you signing twelve-month minimum term contract with TalkTalk Line Rental . So just like BT if you want to leave them in the first year you have to pay a penalty.

    And, guess what, that's £70!

    Remarkable.

Yes indeed especially when people call them and they criticise BT for their 12 month contract term, and £70 buy out. Yet they operate the very same terms !!!
  • I recently bought a house which has been converted into separate "flats" and now i am having a problem trying to get BT to re-connect a phone line because there were 3 BT lines in the house and i only want the line that was used on the first floor to be re-connected but i have no idea who the tennants were and BT keep saying to me they cannot do anything unless i give them a name. Is this really the case? And do i therefore have to pay the charge for adding a new phone line, even though there are already 3 lines in the house? Any advice much appreciated.

Can you plug a phone in and see if it has a dial tone, then if it does get the number by dialling 17070 and see if that helps in changing it knowing the number.

But if they have not cancelled the contract you could be stuck, any way of finding out who was the last to use it?

Estate agents, solicitors, Mortgage company. I bet you will get some mail through the door with a name on it.

I am sure others will be along soon to give better advice than I can, but if it was me and I had to pay for a new line I would have a new line not the old one reactivated.
  • even in the old days of bt (like 2 years ago) ...a house that is converted into flats would mean you were liable for an installation charge

I have just contacted BT as I would like to go back to them from my current provider (Kingston Communications) The female I spoke to said it would cost me a few pence less than £125 as I have a dead BT line and an engineer will have to go to the exchange.

Has anyone else had to pay this or any tips on how to get this wavered as the female wasn't budging tonight...
